Your comment about cold weather causing nail changes is right on. As soon as we get to FL in January, the nails start reverting to prior condition. Even DH notices a change to the skin on his fingers once cold weather starts in. He will put on thin gardening gloves every time he goes outside to do anything.
When it get really cold, he will apply New Skin to keep skin tears at bay. The smell is very strong but will eventually diminish.

@jlkz My nails are strong and healthy and I normally need to cut them back about every two weeks or I'll look like a dragon lady.
But, around this time of the year, every year, my nails start breaking and tearing on the side...not my thumbs and pinky fingers though.
I have a cosmotology license and have been trained in nail care, but for the life of me, I can't seem to stop this issue. I used to repair them, but now I just cut them short. Even shorter, they tear on the sides and I have a few ridges that will split.
I figure one more month and they will be back to normal.

Tips has changed my life, I'm not kidding. I started way back when QVC used to present it. I use it only every couple of days, usually when I'm watching TV after dinner and don't plan on washing my hands for a couple hours. My nails are a reasohable length and I file them down with a glass file. OPI seem to be the best. I have broken down and worn polish a couple of times over the years and left it on for a week or so. Each time the polish has ruined my nails, so I'm obviously allergic. It takes months to regrow them out, so I'll not wear polish for the rest of my life.

@Twins Mom .............It comes with aging. That is the reason I get gel nails and have them done.

For most of my life I had beautiful, strong nails. Now, I keep them very short. Thumb nails are the hardest / thickest.
Except for a few months in my long life when I went with acrylic nails, no nail polish was used. In the last two years they started to get ridges and two nails on the left hand would flakes at the tips. If I am faithful to using the product below, all goes well.
The matte gold bottle has nail polish in it so it does work the way the shiny bottle does:

My nails used to do this often but then I discovered the glass nail file. What a difference it made. It works well for these splits because you can really get close to the nail. I also use a cuticle oil (T.I.P.S.) and rub the excess around /over the nail. This has helped me with the "tear" situation. Good Luck.

Sounds like your nails are very weak. Perhaps there is a nutrient you are low on? Otherwise I think keeping them soft with lotion or oil could work.

Prior to retiring I used to get acrylic/gel tips for years, when I stopped getting my nails done they were soft and would sometimes split, I would brush a light coat of super glue on the tear and wait until it grew out to file down. I keep my natural nails short and they are healthy and strong as ever now.
