Eyeshadow applicator

I purchased an eyeshadow collection for my daughter for Christmas. (Lorac "Box Office" kit at Sephora.)

I want her to succeed as she starts trying makeup...I bought an eyeshadow primer for her to use. The kit does not come with applicators--can those who wear eyeshadow please advise on the type of applicator to buy for her (brush or sponge-tip?).
