Eye cream - is it really necessary?

I've heard some say that eye cream is just a gimick to get more $ out of consumer and that you don't really need this. They've said that moisturizer in the eye area that you use for day/night is the same as what they put in the small eye cream bottle, jar, tube, etc. Is this true? Does eye cream really make a difference?
