Embarrassing question

Hi there all you wonderful helpful Wenners. I live on Maui. This year the vog (like smog but comes from the volcano) has been very irritating to my skin. So much so that I had to skip my last color treatment in April. I thought my skin was getting better but last weeks color for my white roots really burned. My scalp is all red and flaking. Is there any gentle color process that will not irritate? I'll even go with a temporary/washes out color if it will not ruin my head. Many thanks. At work for 4 more hours so can't respond til later.
