Does Retin-A cause breakouts?

I keep getting a zit here and there since using the retin-a and I have had fairly good skin most of my life. Is this a side effect? They are small but still a pain in the posterior.

Not on my face, but I can see where it would cause dry patches.

Re: Does Retin-A cause breakouts?

Back in the nineties I tried the original cream several times and just kept breaking out...what I was trying to stop. But the break out was persistent. I have been using Micro for awhile now with no trouble. Original Retin A has been known to clog pores for some. The time released version, Micro, can be more tolerable for some patients. You may also try the gel version but it is even more drying.

How long have you been using? Possibly this will pass if this is the initial stage.

Sebastia n gave you some good pointers. In the beginning, it can really make a mess of your skin until you pass the initial phase. There are many people who just cannot use Retin A. I would contact your derm with your question and concerns. They may want to try a different regimen for you. I have been using Retin A for almost 20 years with no side affects.

This is my first month. The breakouts aren't major and they may come from the dryness. You know how your skin will fight you sometimes. Oddly enough my forehead which is slightly oily has not gotten any breakouts. I am stuck with the type I have because I don't have insurance so I get the product online.

Re: Does Retin-A cause breakouts?

Kat, since it has only been one month, if you can tolerate what you are going through and it isn't severe, I would push through for another month and see what happens. Twelve weeks is what is needed to see results(of any kind). There are derms that sell generic tretinoin at their offices which can be affordable/attractive for many people and also there are foreign sites that you may purchase a variety of tretinoin deliveries. I have ordered from one site but honestly I didn't feel the purchase was the same as from my pharmacy. Possibly just me, I don't know. Are you using every night? If so, I would use only three x per week at first, maybe twice actually. Sometimes, the every night application is just overwhelming to the skin. You can also buffer with a moisturizer, this will probably compromise efficacy somewhat. Which strength are you using?

If you can use Retin A, this initial stage will be more than worth it for you. I love Micro. Have you tried or investigated other exfoliation methods? I do not know if you are using for aging or problematic skin.

Re: Does Retin-A cause breakouts?

Thank you Sebastian. I am using .05. Many years ago I used Olay and my skin developed dryness and zits, so I used more cream. I was a mess. I think when I get dry that I get the problems. I do use it nightly but I have been using it on top of my moisturizer in some areas. I have vitiligo so just about anything is worth it to me. In April I used a bleaching cream, May I added Retin-A and as of today I am spot free and I had 27 spots on my face. So I can handle a couple zits, lol. They are easier to cover than the spots.
