Curling Long Hair

I'm practicing curling my hair, it's about 3 inches below my shoulder. I've used curling irons and now am using the Conair Ucurl. The curls come out pretty good, but I'm wondering how to keep it neat, not messy and frizzy? I see women all the time with straight hair and they just slightly curl the last inch or so? Any tricks I'm missing? I feel like it comes out too messy? I even put a little shine spray on my hands this morning and rubbed it in...looks ok but think I can do better.
