Crabtree & Evelyn sold out to 2 brothers who made promises that they never delivered. The store in our mall was large, held many events and everyone loved their staff. I shopped there for 30 plus years up to the day it finally closed. The manager and I knew each other from college; she never left that store, she loved it, the brand and the customers. When she was pregnant, customers threw a HUGE baby shower for her. It was an amazing place to shop.
The first thing the brothers did was discontinue their most popular scents. NO ONE understood why. Next, they "updated" the look and brought in trendy items but removed the classic, English items especially food and teas, home items and pared down the Christmas selections. Then they reduced the size of their stores by half or shut them down completely. The online presence was the brothers' idea to make them more money by moving sales to online vs in the store (no cost of real estate or salaries/benefits to employees) but they did a HORRIBLE job with their site. People left and in the end, the company went under.
On the last day the store was opening, a sign had everything at 75% off and no one was in it. I asked her what triggered it all; was Crabtree in a financial mess? Was that why they sold to the brothers? She said that to her knowledge, no. It was simply those who were running the company wanted to retire, the brothers offered them a good price and promised to keep everything the way it was. She waved her hands around the small space "does it LOOK LIKE they kept it the way it was?!."
The end of a wonderful store.
