Re: ComPact 2018 – Now November

We had discussed adopting a new habit.  I guess I've figured out that this month's new habit was bidding Skippy creamy a fond adieu and switching to a peanut butter with fewer ingredients (roasted peanuts and salt).

Sigh.

The end of an era.  And the beginning of a more expensive one.

I was thinking about this today.  Real Simple magazine appeared in 2000.  At some point I subscribed.  But when I decided that living real simple meant real expensive, I ended the subscription.

Why is that?  That simple isn't cheap?

Well, Black Friday has come and gone, how did everyone end up doing with their shopping?...

I don't get into the Black Friday shopping thing, even though it doesn't really get crazy around where I live. Still plenty of good sales right through Christmas Eve. But yesterday after we had lunch out, DH stopped at the Five Below for me. I wanted to get a pair of Bluetooth earbuds that were on special. I was in and out of there quickly, and couldn't wait to get home to try them out.

I like everything about them, except for the fact that they only have a 1-1.5 hours playing time. Had I looked at the specs that are printed right on the box first, I wouldn't have bought them. They can't be returned but that's OK. Only $5.00 spent and for that they're worth it. And I have tinnitus, so I probably shouldn't have them stuck in my ears for much more than an hour anyway.

Re: ComPact 2018 – Now November

@River Song-I'm so sorry that you did not have a good Thanksgiving, but I am very glad to hear that the new medicine that they are giving hubby is working. I hope that it continues to work and that he continues to feel better.

I used to buy a lot of jewelry from QVC back years ago when gold was still relatively inexpensive and silver pieces were dirt cheap. I stopped buying it a long time ago because it started costing more and because I don't wear much anymore either. Once in a blue moon I'll put on a ring or a pair of earrings, but usually it's just my wedding ring and the same studs in my ears every day. At least you're wearing yours and loving it, so it's money well spent in my book!

@just bee- Isn't that funny, that simple isn't cheap? You would think less ingredients would be cheaper and healthier, but not always the case. It is really sad when you think about it, but I think that anytime a company tries to make a "healthier" product they always charge more because they think that people will be willing to spend more to "eat better". It's a shame it has to be that way.

Re: ComPact 2018 – Now November

@Caffeina- I NEVER shop in stores on Black Friday because I just can't tolerate the crowds, it gets really crazy around here. I have been known to shop online though and hubby and I have placed several orders over the last few days. Made a run to Menards yesterday and pretty much got all the shopping wrapped up with the exception of a few stocking stuffers for the kiddos and maybe something for hubby's parents. I like to get done early if I can because I'm the one that puts up the tree, does all the wrapping, bakes, etc. Basically does everything else.

@River Song, so sorry to hear about your husband but so glad the new medication is working. That has to be a huge relief. I will keep my fingers crossed it keeps working for him. Our health is our greatest gift.

@rnmom, I think you have done well this “sale” season. Replacements are what you should be buying at a discount. It is the perfect time. If I needed replacements, I wouldn’t of hesitated.

I have not been out on Black Friday for years now. If I do go out, it is much later in the day when the craziness has died down.  So much is offered online you dont have to leave your house.

I am happy to report I did not buy any beauty products -yet. Some things were tempting but I talked myself out of them and didnt harp on it.  Honestly, it wasnt that tough. There is Cyber Monday to get through. I am already getting emails for it. It is for stores I don’t want to delete because I don’t want to miss the coupons when I do need something. But, I dont know, I am not feeling the strong desire to add to my collection.  Just recently I put all my mu in one place and so glad I did. I think that cured me.   Skincare is next. I am going to organize it and put everything in one place and only keep the items I am working on in my medicine cabinet. So easy to forget when things are scattered about.

I think I will make it through November with no beauty purchases so my NOvember is a success.  Fingers crossed, few “sale” days to go.

Re: ComPact 2018 – Now November

I want to continue my beauty no buy through December too. I think November was a little easier because I just came down off of a buying high so I had that in the background. It made it much easier to talk myself out of buying.  But, December should be just as easy if I dont harp on the “sales” or the overhyped products.

I think a few of you mentioned, if I am not mistaken, a possible no buy next year. I have been contemplating this one for a while so I am in if some of you want to try it as a group.  I should not need any beauty items at all and if I do, they will only be replacements. And replacements will only be for skincare, I shouldn’t need any mu - not a stitch.

I am looking forward to tackling December. It will be another challenge. As i sit here, I am so glad I didnt fold in November and have to deal with the “mental” gymnastics of any new additions, so I am going to use that as motivation in December. I am tired of feeling overwhelmed and really do want to work on reducing my products.

In 2019, I will be using or decluttering beauty items. I have a few things I want to use again and see if they work and, if not, it is time to go. The reality is the items I am not using are not getting any fresher and are now another year older. I dont mind using some things that are older, but I don’t want to put things  on my body that may be harmful even if there are no obvious effects. I dont think most products expire on the date on the bottle, but when you don’t remember when you bought something it might be time.  I have been bad at writing the dates on the products.

Anyhoo, I cant believe I am saying this but I do think I am ready for some kind of no buy. In 2019, I will also be including other categories as well.  For me, it is just about the spending, it doesnt matter the category. 😂  If I am not obsessed, at the moment, with one thing, it is another.  In my quest to declutter, it makes no sense to bring in more things that arent getting used.

Out of sight, out of mind.  When you see what you have and it's in your face every time you open a drawer, you realize you don't need what you think you need.

@just bee, yes, for sure. It surprises me each time I put everything back together. From here on, I am leaving most things in one spot except for the few items I am working on. I start to scatter them so I can get some use out of things, but that doesn’t work for me.
