@aprilskies-Your post tickled my funny bone, when you said you don't even know that you have an item, then you dig thru a drawer and discover it, so all of a sudden you think you are going to use it. Isn't that the truth? Something can sit unnoticed for months or years and when you find it all of a sudden you can't live without it. Crazy huh?

I'm glad you're getting "unstuck" a bit and starting to make some progress. I definitely go in spurts too with my decluttering. I'll go thru drawers and closets and purge lots, then I won't do much for a few months other than routine daily purging of papers, trash, etc. I definitely purge more at certain times of the year with the changing seasons. Right now with the cleaning out of the garage and pole barn we're getting rid of a lot more. Soon the kids will go thru their clothes and get ready for fall weather and I'm sure some fall/winter items will be going. Then things will probably slow down til after the first of the year. So maybe the one item a day will keep me at least doing something small.

@rnmom, isnt that funny.  All of a sudden we need something we didnt know we had.  The funnier part is that when we do need it, we do not remember we even have it. Those are some of the things I am starting to part with.  This one thing a day is helping.  Smaller decisions. It has already made me organize and consolidate and I have freed up one good sized drawer already.

Yea, I go in spurts too.  That is why when I do find one thing to toss/donate, I look for more. I have to take advantage of my current mood. I have found 27 items to toss/donate this week. I will go through them this weekend and make the final decision, altho, I think that is already made, I dont see me changing my mind. 21 of them are mu items, mostly BE.

One of these days, I have to take some time out and go through all of my mu brushes because yesterday I just kept finding boxes and boxes.   Yikes.  I do love brushes, but that is just silly.

Yesterday evening I threw out two lip glosses and one lipstick, and also two unopened tubes of Super Smile, the toothpaste and the whitening accelerator. The Super Smile was the second of an auto-delivery shipmment that I should have cancelled. There was a 2015 expiration date on the toothpaste. I just now remembered they came with travel sizes which I still have, so after I post this I'll get them and throw them out too.

Today, along with the travel size toothpastes, I'm throwing out four more lipsticks. All of these lipsticks I'm getting rid of are too dark. I hate myself in colors that are darker than my lips. They're just not flattering on me at all.

I don't know if I ever mentioned it, but I used to be an Avon rep about 10 years ago for about two years. I was my own best customer, and my accumulation of stuff started about eight years before that. Woman Frustrated

I not really following the one-a-day toss, I'm just tossing (or donating) what I find when I find it. I guess in the end I'm equaling or exceeding getting rid of one thing a day.

@Caffeina, sorry but LOL.  I am so glad being a rep is one thing I didnt get into.  I would easily have a full house full of stuff. Avon was addicting.

I am not doing one item a day but I do try to find at least 7 items for the week, if not, anything is better than nothing. I think it will start to add up if we keep chipping away at it.

Re: ComPact 2018 -- Adaptable August!

@aprilskies- I know @just bee started the September thread but I just had to say, amazing job on finding 27 items to toss/donate this week! That's super! And 21 mu items out is a lot! I bet that has to feel great especially if they're old product. I know that I would rather use something new and fresh rather than something that has been sitting around for years. And it takes SO long to use up makeup that you'll probably never get to it.

I bought an eyeshadow palette from Beauty Gems around Christmas of 2016 and didn't even start using it until Christmas of 2017 because I had other items here I was using up. I've been using it almost exclusively this whole year so far and have barely made a dent in it. I bet it could last me another year at least. One palette! But, of course, I bought an e.l.f. palette for Christmas last year that I think I've used twice. Plus I have some newer loose shadows here too (but I'm not sure how much I'll use those). So even using new makeup every day it's hard to get thru it in a reasonable time frame. I'd definitely toss the old stuff and enjoy the new. I'm debating whether or not to toss the Beauty Gems palette this Christmas and just start using the e.l.f. It will be 2 years old then and I want to use the newer stuff myself. Problem is I really like the palette, and it was cheap, like $9. At that price I could gift myself a new one every year and always have fresh new eyeshadow to use! But I'm definiely not buying anything this year because I still have the huge e.l.f. palette. When will I learn? Don't buy an item if it's just going to be sitting around for a year? Sigh. Maybe next year.

@rnmom

Join the club.  I'd mentioned that I somehow collected several Burt's Bees products last year and I haven't made a dent in them.  Hand salve, hand cream, foot cream (when have I ever used a foot product?), cuticle cream, lip balms.  And these were two small gift sets with tiny products.

I'm looking at the Burt's Bees site this morning and they have several new products and even new lip balms.  I always carry lip balm in my pocket and I still can't use up a tube.

I'm going to have to be brutal about the old lip products in the drawer.  When am I ever going to use those e.l.f. and philosophy glosses?
