It's not the buying, it's the browsing.
i couldn't wait for May to share with you something I just read on the Food 52 blog from Cait Flanders. She's the one who did a shopping ban for a year. She said this AHA! thing:
"I don’t browse anymore. If I could rename the shopping ban, I would probably call it a “browsing ban,” because browsing is what made me want to buy more stuff—and stopped me from appreciating what I already had. So I don’t do that. Instead, I’ve learned how to feel the need, and live without something for a while before making a purchase. This means I only buy stuff when I’m genuinely ready to use it, rather than think I’ll use it one day and let it collect dust."
There is a lot to unpack in this statement...

I didn't mean to misstate my age, @just bee! LIke you, I kinda lost track.
And as we get older, people seem to ask less, but tell the truth more when asked.
It caught my attention when you said you're pushing 60, instead of saying 58. What's that about? I don't believe for a second your story about being lazy, or fishing for compliments.
I hear my older friends constantly mentioning age, referring to themselves as old, etc. at times it almost seems like an obsession. And I find myself doing it sometimes as well.
But it it doesn't feel good, so why do it? Superstition? Angst?

I do that when I’ve done something stupid. I use “old” as an excuse for a lot of things. 🤫

That’s how the unnecessary buying starts. Can’t buy unless you’ve browsed. If you need something, you don’t need to look at anything else, just purchase what you need. This has been studied for eons and is why the stores are laid out the way they are. Even grocery stores.
Like many people, I don’t watch QVC much anymore. I normally will either purchase what I need, or if I know something I’m interested in is going to be featured, I’ll just watch that product presentation. However, lately I have had the TV on a lot more than normal and have not only put on QVC but also one or two of the other shopping channels. I have absolutely no interest in getting involved with another shopping channel, so I haven’t ordered a thing from the others. There was one product that appealed to me, so I ordered a sample of it from Amazon. I wasn’t overly impressed. But every time I see these same products presented on that other channel, I am so tempted to order these so-so products!
Proves the old adage: Out of sight, out of mind.

Browsing. Looking for things to buy and ways to spend money. That was the first step for me. I used to get the Sunday paper and looked forward to studying all the store ads. I stopped doing that but now the stores just send me emails. In fact, I just received a postcard from philosophy for a BOGO offer. I usually delete email and won't even read them but every now and then...
Like today. I actually looked at an Aveda free shipping offer. Why?
@geezeretteyou mentioned putting off buying your supplements. That's what eventually happens when you stop browsing and using leisure time to scour the stores. I don't shop anymore. And when I do find myself in a brick and mortar I go to the aisles that have what I need. I find myself putting off buying what I do need as long as I can.
But I'm not an idiot about it. I was down to my last Dove deodorant and put off going to Costco to restock. I asked BH as I was putting my deodorant in the cart if he needed any because his was on sale, too. He said no. Well, of course he is in that mode of "if I don't need it NOW I don't need it ever" and that is the aspect of this new minimalism that irks me. Last week we were at Costco and he bought deodorant because was he was completely out. Not on sale. What exactly would have been the harm of buying it a week earlier when it was?
Incidentally, I've discovered that he has thrown away more of my planters. The only reason I haven't bludgeoned him to death is that he made a really good curry this week. ![]()

I think I'm saying "60" now because before I know it I will be. It's May already! I'm realizing that I don't have that much time to say "someday I'll do that, go there, accomplish that." I don't. The clock's ticking.
Well, that was depressing.
I guess it's also incentive to get things in order. If I haven't used an item in 20 years I really doubt I'll be using it 20 years from now. Which, at the rate things are going, is like, next week.

But here's the good news. The Russian olives haven't actually starting blossoming, but I can detect the scent already.
Not only that, but we saw a beaver, a falcon and an egret in the bosque (which smelled like Russian olive blossoms) today. And we met a lot of wonderful dogs. Even a Deerhound. ![]()

I always round up. Much like saying an item that is $2.95 is $3.
Right now I’m bouncing between thinking about the next twenty (or at least ten) years and not making next week. Trying to take care of every little detail, or just chucking everything other than what is absolutely necessary.
The “necessary” list is pretty long, though. I have a lot of needs, even if I’m not going to be here forever.

The "necessary" list is adding up. I've never followed a "budget" and I can't even say what I earn and what I spend on a monthly basis. Yesterday I sat and added up my expenses for April. The majority was state, federal and property taxes as well as tax preparation costs. The only money I spent on me -- on "personal" items -- was for deodorant and shampoo/conditioner. The one splurge was pizza.
I swear if I ever get a new tattoo it'll be "T.S. Eliot was right."
Definitely ready for May.

@Oshare-girl I have never hit pan on any eyeshadow. Good for you!! Hopefullly I'll hit pan sometime this year, since I have stopped buying eyeshadows since February.
That is an awesome feeling to hit pan. I think I only hit pan on two eyeshadows ever and never finished one. This weekend, I am going to clean all of my brushes and start making time for mu in the morning. @Oshare-girl is making me jealous.
You can do it! So here's a disclaimer. I've been working on a tiny palette from Stowaway Cosmetics that I bought 2 years ago. I thought for sure I'd be able to finish it, but the shadows were not suited to my skintone. I really only liked 3 shades so I've only been using those. That's how it hit pan on them. And today I hit pan on one more shade! So I'm really thrilled to see those pans. It motivates me to see those pans. And I've been enjoying my makeup time in the mornings so that's helps.
Oh...I also used a denser brush which picked up more shadow. I had to tap off in between applications. There, those are all my secrets.
