@Sherrilz Keep up with this thread. I've been following it for at least 3 years and it's really helped me through this process of paring down and being mindful about my shopping habits. I still get tempted by all the pretty, shiny, new things but more and more often I have been able to bypass them.
In 2013 I started to keep an inventory of my makeup on my cell phone so I could look at it when I got tempted. Did I really want to buy a new lipstick when I had 10 and it takes me 3-4 months to use one up? Or a blush that I don't even know how long it takes to finish because I haven't finished one yet? The silver, er brushed nickel lining is that my numbers have steadily decreased over the years. Now I think I'm more obsessed with using things up instead of buying them.
This week I had the ultimate eating my cake moment. I was nearly out of my Paula's Choice (I'm a fan of some of her products) 2% BHA when I saw that she's running a sale with free shipping. Bingo! I ordered a bottle of BHA and that's it. Sure, some new things caught my eye like her new cleansing oil, but I have a full bottle of a discontinued BM cleansing oil in my stash.
Boy, have I learned my lesson about not stocking up. That BM cleansing oil that I loved has become meh. The joy I had for it has disappeared. I don't know why. It was discontinued last year so I kept buying bottles when they showed up in the last chance sale section. Now I have one more bottle and I'm forcing myself to finish it. Things change. We can't predict when or why, but they do. And I know I can count on the beauty industry to come up with something bigger & better when they decide to discontinue my favorite products. I'm done with stockpiling. Maybe I'll keep one backup but no more.
My pride and joy has been my ability to use one lipstick at a time. This year I am on schedule to finish 4 full sized lipsticks. It takes 3 months of daily use to do this. I never thought I would be a one lipstick girl. One of my best friends has only one lipstick and I used to wonder how she could live like that. Now I strive to be like her.
Me and @aprilskies have a thing for eyeshadow palettes. This is another area where I am experiencing some weird changes, like I don't really want to wear eyeshadow. I might have a day here or there where I will enjoy the process of applying several shades of shadow. But this week I had a cold and just didn't feel up to it. I just applied concealer, mascara, eyebrows, blush and lipstick which is bare-bones for me. No eyeshadow and I kind of liked the finished product. I looked fresh even though I was sick. I've experienced the opposite where people have asked me if I was sick when I had a full face of makeup on. Not fun. But @aprilskies, I have checked out the 9-pan Huda eyeshadows and thought, "It's only 9 pans, not a mega palette. Maybe I will be able to finish it." But who am I kidding. I can't even finish the tiny Tartelette Tease 6-pan palette. I actually ended up not liking the one shade that I originally thought was my favorite from that palette and now I can't bare to wear it. Ugh, so I haven't purchased any palettes this year. I'm still working on what I have but I'm planning to declutter any that I don't enjoy using next year.
Finally, fragrances. I whittled down my collection to 2 classics, Philosophy Amazing Grace and Jo Malone Lime Basil & Mandarin. I tried out some samples of perfume oils and ended up really enjoying them. My bosses have allergies and the oils were subtle enough for me to enjoy them without bothering anyone else. Now those 2 big bottles of perfume are sitting there unused. Amazing Grace is almost finished but Jo Malone is just not my taste anymore. Such a pity.
Anyway, I am totally enjoying what I currently have wanted to encourage @Sherrilz that there is hope. Our products aren't the boss of us! We call the shots.

BTW, @just bee says in the opening of each month that they say it takes 30 days to create a new habit, but I guess for me, it's more like 4 years. Slow learner.![]()

@Sherrilz wrote:Ok. I just got a Coach Outlet 70% off email. i went on there and added 6 items to my shopping bag. I was so tempted. You can return through 1/15/18. I was going to have my husband give stuff to me for xmas. But I still have probably 6 coach bags at home with the tags on I haven't used and probably a dozen more that I do use and rotate in. I need another purse like I need a hole in the head. But I am soooooo tempted since the sale is so good and they are soooooo cute.
Oooh! Seventy percent?! Now that is hard to resist!

We should print this and post a copy in every room of the house.
