I definitely do not want to go back to school for nursing like our dear friend Just Bee, but I may have to do that just to get into a new field!

I don't recommend it, either! {#emotions_dlg.lol}

You say you volunteer at a hospital so you must be familiar with the environment. Are they hiring HUCs or techs? Some training would be involved, but I have to say I don't recommend that, either! {#emotions_dlg.lol} (When I first started toying with the nursing idea, I became a HUC and then a tech. Many hospitals have eliminated the HUC position.)

Since you are not in a "desperate" situation and your husband sounds like a peach, I would use this stretch of unemployment as an opportunity to try on a new career. What did you want to do when you were 17? 20? 25?

When I was laid off after September 11, 2001, I applied for 82 jobs in 7 months. I ended up working at a non-profit arts organization and it fulfilled that crazy need I had when I first when off to a university at 17 to major in theater/film. I loved it and stayed three years. Met the most wonderful people -- every day was an adventure. Especially since the place was in one of the worst areas in town!

I had the opportunity to "wear different hats" and do a little bit of everything. I just wanted to do something completely different, something fun. I had applied for jobs at the hospitals, schools, colleges, museums, doggy daycare, and even our local public TV station. Ended up working in community theater and it was a fantastic transition period for me. Gave me time to reconnect with what I had loved as well as time to figure out what to do next. (I did just about everything but perform, ironically.)

Are there any little gourmet shops in your area? Places that sell food or places that sell culinary items? There are stores like that here and some offer cooking classes. Have you thought about working for a caterer? Or starting your own business?

What do you love? What's your passion?

Just Bee, my passion is what I am trained to do museum professional/historian. I hope that I can find another position in my field, but they are getting scarce. I wonder how long it would take to get training as a x-ray tech do you know?

Depends. Several community colleges offer training in Radiologic Technology and that's generally a 2-year program -- if, of course, you have all the prerequisites required. Our local community college program is 5 terms, and prereqs include Psych, and Anatomy & Physiology I and II, as well as general ed courses that you'd probably already have in your transcripts.

Healthcare programs are popular and they attract a variety of students. Some are older with previous work/life experience and degrees; others are there only to delay a future in the state penitentiary. Did that sound a tad harsh? But I issue that as a warning that your classmates may be a mixed bag. A few of them probably shouldn't be allowed to work with vulnerable people.

Today was tempted by the lovely colors in today's sheet TSV. Decided not to order. Looked on several other websites for sheets and will not order due to bad reviews and the fact that I do have enough. Trying to work though a lot of extra items and not buy items to store for future use. This thread helps.

Gee, that is encouraging! I just feel very stressed about being unemployed and I feel like life is "getting away from me." I do not want to pay for anymore college I am debt free. I wish I could just get a certificate and some training somewhere!

Just Bee, what else in the med field is there that you don't have to go back to school for years and years?

I have the luxury of another partial day off, after taking parents to medical appointments. I am really happy that I bought several pair of wool long underwear earlier this month. The temperatures are bitterly cold here, and no relief in sight. I have been wearing them every day.

I got all those no longer worn clothes moved from one closet to the spare room the last weekend of December, and now I must finish the task of sorting them. I've been putting that off for a while, but today is the day it will be done.

Congrats to you, luvstosshop, on paying off the cards. I pay cash wherever I can nowadays. That is such a good feeling and now, when I go to use the card, I ask myself whether the item I want is really so essential that I need to charge it.

You know, once no buy January is over, we could have a "Room a Month" club. Pick one room in your house and declutter it in the most environmentally friendly way possible. I'm thinking of starting with my living room/dining room to build up some steam, then moving on to the kitchen.

Favorite Son, nothing is better than to donate clothes that do not fit or you just don't want anymore. After being ruthless and doing that last year my closet is so much lighter and easier to use. No more going through every sweater just to find one that fits and is the right color for your skin tone. Life is so much easier without so much stuff.

dperry, I know that now. But it sure took a long time to get there. And when this month is over, I know that I am going to buy some of Louis' new whisper knit sweaters and get rid of an equal or greater amount of things to keep the space free.

Our community college combines fields and has a School of Heath, Wellness, and Public Safety. The programs of study include:

Cosmetology

Criminal Justice

Dental Assisting

Diagnostic Medical Sonography

Emergency Medical Services

Fire Science

Fitness Technician

Health Information Technology

Medical Laboratory Sciences

Nursing

Nursing Assistant/Unit Coordinator

Paralegal Studies

Pharmacy Technician

Radiologic Technology

Respiratory Therapy

Surgical Technology

Veterinary Technology

Before hospitals cut the HUC position in most units (Health Unit Coordinator), that was a great way to invest one term, get a certificate, and find employment in a hospital just to find out if you liked it. Before the electronic medical record and computer charting, it was the HUC who interpreted the doctors' scrawl and put orders into the computer. Some units still use HUCs and so do some nursing homes. Some schools offer a CNA or NAHA program. These are the nursing assistants or techs that you see in healthcare; other schools offer a "medical assistant" program which is like a cross between a tech and a HUC. It's clerical and clinical work.

The work is challenging and the pay is shockingly low. But I did this to see if I wanted to commit to nursing school.

Oh -- it's time for us to take the world's greatest dog out for his daily outing. I'll be back shortly!

I like this idea because I've thought about the "one room at a time" concept for... uh, ever. I can see a declutter/organization/clean phase and then a redecorate/renovate phase at some point in the future.

I'm in!
