Coloring the scalp?

Lisa robertson just said she colors her scalp because she has thin or fine hair. I didn't know that was possible. I always thought the color would wash off the skin and would be permanent on the hair. Does anyone know? After I color my hair, my scalp is a little darker, but it eventually lightens as I wash my hair, but the dye stays on my hair, not my scalp. .??
