Clarification needed..

I know this may sound funny but what is the difference between a moisturizer and a serum? I am still holding on to 61 yo and have normal/dry skin. Do I need both? I know obviously that a moisturizer adds hydration but I've seen serums claim to do this also. If I should be using both, so be it but I just can't believe all the skin care there is and it sure does get confusing.

Any help would be really appreciated...thanks in advance for taking the time to reply!
