Can someone please explain the Allure free stuff

The site says stuff like "the first 500 allure readers to sign up get it free" "it" being the item that is featured which is listed on the calendar. So do I need to buy a subscription at that specific time to get the item free? Or can I get the item free w/o the subscription? I just don't understand.
