My fall/winter magazines are showing dark wine lip colors and nude shades. There are matte finishes and those that have a lacquer look.
Is their a "look" or is it anyone's guess?

I don't worry about what's in or out. I guess the problem I have with what's in or out is that if you happen to like what's considered 'out' the whatever you like is difficult to find.
I like red lipstick. Lipstick is something I think can make a lot of difference in one's appearance (along with eye makeup).
I'll be 71 this year. I don't leave the house without makeup on. Just my preference. I just feel better.
There's several brands of red that I like. I also like matt lipstick. Laura Geller makes a red lipstick that's matt and it doesn't dry out lips or feel dry. Also Isaac makes a true red lipstick similar but I really like Laura Geller.
I hate most of these 'creamy' lipsticks because within 1/2 to 1 hour it's gone! What good is it putting it on? You have to constantly be putting it on.
There are times when I tone down the color. I just personally don't care for pinky pink lipstick. I think with matt lipstick what you need to be careful of is 'bleeding' outward from the lips. You know, those tiny fine lines you get from the lips. If there's one thing I'm happy with is I don't have a problem with that but if I did I'd find a good lipliner and use that first.
This is just my personal preference. I'm not as knowledgeable as lipstick queen (she rocks), but I do know what I like. It just seems to me that these days whatever you think works for you goes. That's the way I think it should be.

I feel cosmetics companies do this to make us buy more lipstick.I tend to my own shades anyway. Pinks and light berries in summer, chocolate nudes and more orange reds in winter. I know women say you can't have too m any lipsticks, but yes, you can. :-)

At this stage in the game (mid 60's), I do not follow trends in lipstick. I wear what I like and sometimes it's a medium shade and sometimes lighter. The dark shades are not for me. Dark shades make you lips look smaller. Light shades make lips look larger. ![]()

I tend to wear what looks the best on me...at least I try to. That may not always be what's "on trend".. For instance I can't wear a nude...I look so washed out & awful in them but they are popular and look great on mnay!
For me it's shades of deep berry & reds.

@Katcat1 Do you like matte or glossy lips?

Sestra, of course they do this to make us buy more. Same thing with eyebrow products, from the no eyebrow look to a thin line to big bushy brows, its constantly changing. I love trying new shades of lipstick but always in the dark nude or mauve families. The eyebrows I haven't changed in years, I just fill in what is missing with Benefit pencil.

I vote for wear what you want, like and adore! What looks good on your lips, skin or with whatever you are wearing! No rules on lipstick!

I wear what I like and what looks best on me. Angel Red and Merlot by Clinique are two favs. I also like Decadent and Emotional by Estee Lauder. I like Berry Pop, Love Pop, and Cola Pop by Clinique Pop plus primer lip color. I love the lipstick as it is long wearing and non drying but the colors are limited. I never wear pale lip color or glosses. Pale lips make me look like a ghost and gloss bleeds into the lines and don't last more that 30 minutes.
I am not a fan of matte formulas as I think they are drying. I don't have problems with bleeding unless the formula is too creamy. Lip glosses are not an option for me.
