Best Solution for Ridges on Nails

I would love to have a nice looking manicure but I have such bad ridges on my nails. I've tried ridge filling base coats but they always seem thick and messy. I used to use a buffer to get rid of ridges but my nails got very thin. What am I missing? Is there something else that works great or should I just learn to live with them?
