@timeless  -  If you're 57, I say color or highlight.  You can go grey in another 20 years or so.

i stopped coloring going on two years ago.    i used a demi-perm color that was no longer available and did my own highlights.  the last time i got salon highlights in 2016,  my hair turned orange.

it's not so bad now having grown out maybe 8".  demi-perm fades with less demarcation most of the white is streaks in the front.  my hair is long,, close to bra-band line, and i get good healthy cuts to remove the old color. my hair is shiny now and not dulled from color in it and no need to dump gobs of condtioner on it.

sure sometimes i get weak and want to grab a box of color.

I'm 57 years old and have what used to be called in the 1970's, dishwater/dirty blond hair.

Fast forward to 2023 and I have dishwater brown hair with a very white "streak" as my husband calls it, at my temples.  With a tiny bit of white highlighting throughout the rest.

I'm not up on the latest in hair fashion color, so can someone tell me if I'm dating myself with this haircolor style?  Should I go back to (pre-2020) my ash brown with highlights?

Since my face has drooped a little and a bit more wrinkles have appeared since 2020,  I'm not wanting to try to look like a 30-40 year old!

I see a lot of hosts on QVC with colored hair and "oldish" faces.  (I'm talking about my age group here)

It took me two years to grow this color out.  I don't want to go through that again if the style is still trending to show off the gray.

Oh wow @timeless

57 yo!  You have a whole lotta living left in ya!!  I'm excited for ya!    Lotsa time for you (& hubby) to keep kicking up your heels!  Woman Happy

One word of advice.  If you color your hair, DO NOT try to color it even close to the color it was when young (& then we had no face lines).

    As we get older, the color MUST be softer, & *at least 2 shades lighter,* & softer.

     Darker, or attempts to be the color we were when young, just accents,  darkens & deepens the "age lines we've earned in our face" by * A LOT!. *

A few shades Lighter (& softer) ARE MUCH, MUCH BETTER! as we age.

Good luck!  Woman Happy

But if you don't have age/face lines, dark is still fine.

When I go to see Patrick Mahomes on April 1st, my hair will be a rich espresso, my toes will be glittery and my Yellow Box flip flops will be sparkling

Well, from a maintenance standpoint, it's much easier to keep highlights refreshed and looking good than having something done that gives you roots growing out in a few weeks.

The actual hair color and what's flattering is one thing .... and how much maintenance you wish to tolerate is something else altogether.

I will be 70 in July.  I stopped coloring my chin length dark brown hair Feb. 2020...my Pandemic Project.  SOOOO glad I did.  My hair gets many compliments silvery around hairline and salt and pepper the rest.  I use minimal makeup...BE original foundation, light shadow, dark shadow for liner and lipstick.  When we go someplace such as a party or dinner, i use mascara.  Lots of makeup when you are a senior is not a good look IMO.  To each her own...

I agree, and if you decide to go full head color, please keep up the roots.  I think if women are coloring, they should make the commitment to keep up their roots.  Having an inch of white down the part or around the temples looks worse than any gray hair ever will.

I would get a color that works with your skin tone.  You want to look the best that you can be for your age.  Just because you may not want to go grey doesn't mean you are trying to look like a 20 year old!

I'm 68 and my own face has a bit of sagging.  It's not pretty.  However I have almost no gray and I'm a dark brunette.

I get highlights a few times a year and right now they are all grown & cut out...my hair is much too dark!  I'm getting soft & subtle highlights on Thursday and I can't wait!

I feel that my solid head of dark hair is not flattering.  I need highlights to add a bit of brightness around my face...to look the best that I can at my age.

@JoyFilled Warrior

You know, I've been watching some YouTube channels on makeup, fashion and life of women my age and up and they say the same as you!  Lighter is better.  Soft coloring.

I'll seriously consider this. Thanks!

@tends2dogs

I think you're right about the highlights and not going in on a full color with a grow out white streak.  (skunk streak)

I was thinking about asking for a lowlight into my gray (to match my main color) and then some lighter highlights throughout.

But what a maintenance plan!!  LoL
