Every now and again I do a purge of my stash, I'm due for one. I use to have a rule if I bought something new, something older had to go but I haven't been adhering to it in awhile.

@Jordan2 - I've been doing that with makeup and also with clothes.  It really has helped me think before purchasing.  When I think I want to try something new, I'll go look at my stash to see what I want to get rid of and realize that I like all that I have and don't need it.  Sometimes it works better than others but it has helped.

I confess, there are areas where I'm wasteful, but I don't drink, smoke, or gamble, so I don't feel overly guilty.  đź¤·â€Ťâ™€ď¸Ź

I think the distinction might be made whether makeup and skin care is a need or a hobby like going to the movies or sewing or such.  Hobbies cost money and are things you don't need.

For me, the answer to not being wasteful was to quit trying things and buy then use what I need.  No more.

I am too wasteful. I try and use every bit of products but I dont always and will just toss them away but at least they are almost used up.

I use what I like and then I sometimes move on....I don't see it as being wasteful. Smiley Happy

Hi, @Jordan2 .  I recently downsized my beauty collection to a reasonable size for me, getting rid of stuff I wasn't using or rarely used.  The items I got rid of, including brushes which I'd cleaned if used, went to Project Beauty Share in Spokane, WA.  Thanks to @JudyL  for recommending this organization for gently used or new beauty items that I didn't need.

I use everything that works for me.  I do try to use up the jar/bottle at least once & if I see no improvement then I don't buy it again.  I have thrown out items that I flat out don't like, but I do give myself ample time to judge it before tossing it.

@SoCal Bred   Same here. I always ask for samples or trial sizes. I do a lot of research like @SilleeMee on skincare before purchasing. If what I already have works, why move on to something new?

I recall you saying that you were purchasing various skincare items, and "testing" them out for at least six weeks.

IMG_5993.jpegI usually know fairly soon whether or not a product works for me: if it doesn't I pass it on to my cousin who has loved to try makeup since a teenager ( we are in our 70's now ).  Given certain circumstances, she cannot afford today's prices.

Any hotel samples go to her also....she never knows what all is in any package she gets !

I've mentioned in other posts about a shade of lipstick that has been discontinued by Rimmel for years: Casbah.  My stash was down very low until I decided to dig out what was in the bottom of the container.

In the picture below is the salvaged amount from 2 of the "empty" containers.  Stored it in any empty makeup container I also saved.  It needs to be applied with a lip brush at my makeup table:
