Having color issues. My natural hair color is almost black. I was thinking of transitioning to gray. This is one of my problems....Now I have not had my hair colored to my natural color since late Jan. The Gray is only on the top & some on the sides which is salt & pepper but the problem is I have absolutely no gray at all in the back of my head! So, I it would look horrid to grow out the gray I have until I get more gray in that area. Do you Agree? (I am 62) Now, at my age I feel my blackish hair is too harsh. I was thinking of using a boxed med. Brown shade which would soften the look but not sure how that would look considering the black in the back of my head. What do you think? I do not want to use any type of bleaching agent. Thankyou.

If you're interested in going natural, when salons open it might be easier to have your hairdresser thread your natural gray color throughout the rest of your hair. I'm thinking of doing the same thing myself!

good luck with that, I asked a couple of stylists and they either don't have the skill or don't want to

@buckeyegirl1 Thank You for the response but thats just another process that only a skilled pro could do well. That is not the answer for me. I do have long hair with no layers except for long bangs which I am growing out. Possibly, it might look ok when the top grows longer & I keep on triming it regulary as my hair grows really fast. I am now wearing in a loose high bun which looks much better than wearing it down.

@KabellaNot a hairdresser, but my experience might help you. Once upon a time I had hair so dark that when My HS picture was handpainted (do they still do that anywhere?), the artist relieved the darkness with a little blue to enhance the shine.
Forward to when I was 32 and started to have color applied (family goes gray early and aggressively). I needed the color more on top than in the back, but that colorist chose to begin to lighten me all over - first into dark brown. That worked well for quite a while.
But over the years as more and more gray took over and my skin lost more vibrance, colorists have decreased the darkness so that now I'm a much lighter brown all over. That still works better for my hair and skin than going natural.
When this whole stay at home ends, I still won't be shopping for jewelry and clothes or going out to eat all that often or traveling so much, but I will return to the salon!
No matter what else - I have to look into a mirror everyday - I have yet to see myself or anyone else who looks attractive with naturally fine, thinning hair. I don't try to look 30 or 50 or even 70 - just the best I can look at my age with my current hair.
Kabella, you have lots of choices and the dyes available today are so much better than the ones I started with. Don't know what the professionals here will tell you - I'd tell you to experiment with a shade a bit lighter than your natural dark, use it first where there's the most gray and comb it through to the dark back for a few minutes near the end of the processing time. Good luck.

I have dark hair also I have not colored for years. I also did not have grey in back or sides. I keep it short and after 3 years it's starting to go grey. But I must say it didn't look bad. I don't see the back of my head. And no one ever said the back of your head is dark.

This is so very brave. Entering the gray hair wars. 👏🏻

I am not sure they can put grey in, I think they would have to subtract color rather than add color to get the hair grey. As I understand it hiar would have to be bleached and colored I do not think it is as easy as is seems

@millieshops Thank You. I will say that my hairdresser thinks I can still pull off the Black hair. I don't think so as I have to look into the mirror & think I need a softer but slightly lighter shade of brown. I told her I did not want to bleach my hair, even tho it is on the healthy side & not sparse but a thicker fine texture. She is new since I recently moved to Fl. I have not totally comitted to gray & thats another dilemma. If I do decide to go lighter, I don't think I have a choice but to grow the gray I have longer & then highlight it in the back? Then a shoulder cut.
