Slightly O/T, but not really. I was watching some crazy channel this morning and it was like the agricultural channel or something. It was like an hour long news cast, but it was all about farming, pesticides (ugh) and even livestock.

During one story, I couldn't help to notice that they kept showing a pig nursing her young. The female was laying on her side and there were poles keeping her from being able to stand and to even nuzzle her young.

Every once in a while one of the piglets would be pushed away from feeding by the others and it would wander up to the Mama's head and the Mama would try to smell it and nuzzle it, but was held back by these bars or poles.

I kept rewinding and looking to see this very sad reality. The mother couldn't get up on her own feet because she was held down in to lay on her side to nurse. She wouldn't have been able to turn around in this stall even if she was standing.

I thought of the claustrophobic aspect of this situation and the inhumane treatment all for the sake of bacon, ham, chops or a hot dog.

No thank you.

My mom grew up on a farm and said that is so the Sow won't roll over and kill one of her young. Unless, protected many young die from their mother. We were at a farm and I wondered the same thing.

How do they test products that are not tested on animals? Just curious?

By the way, I keep meaning to thank the OP for bringing the subject up as a info/reminder for those that are interested in the trying to go, or remaining, cruelty-free. Smile

I too belong to many animal and environmental advocate groups and forums, and I'm vegan, and I'm just replying to say BRAVO ladies! There was a time a few years back, that whenever I would question or speak up against animal testing on these boards, that I would get royally slammed for my opinion! I'm just so thrilled that more people are becoming conscientious of the terrible things being done for the sake of beauty. I do use Isomers, and have no qualms, as I have found them to be very open for any discussion. I believe they are even in the process of removing the lab created micro spheres from their scrubs, as it's been found that they are (not just Isomers') actually polluting our beautiful Great Lakes. I questioned them about it last year, and received an immediate reply from Darius the next day. I also hate that animals are still being tested on for medical reasons, but if it does indeed lead to a cure for an incurable human disease, my heart is torn. Actually, my older brother is a highly respected biochemist who has to use mice in his experimentation for a cure for Alzheimers. We come to odds many times, but I try to be open minded for such a noble pursuit. Again, thank you ladies (and gents if any here) for being such wonderful advocates and teachers!

Well said, HomebodyinMichigan Smiley Happy. ( and I was born in Michigan Smiley Wink ) What gets me sometimes, too, is that when people try to have a discussion about testing cosmetics on animals, someone usually has to throw in there "hey so now you won't take medicine that could save your life because its tested on animals?" I always think "Can't your mind focus on one thing at a time? Medicine to live and makeup to have rosy cheeks are NOT the same thing. I wish animals in laboratories never had to exist, but progress can be made somewhere, and that can begin with cosmetics. But a cure for life's ails is not equivalent to makeup.

Thank you MaggiOla. Well said yourself! P.S. I'm in Kalamazoo, a college town, but home to a giant pharma, so have been having these type of discussions my whole life! Lol!

I'm an "outsider" to the cause, but wanted to mention, my DH and I were Kzoo last weekend. We met my sister and BIL at the farmer's market, then had lunch at the Old Peninsula Brew Pub downtown. We sat outside and had a really nice time. Good place!

Re: Animal testing

[ Edited ]

How accurate is the Paula's Choice site regarding their information on animal testing:

Beautypedia - Annual Animal Testing Report

http://www.paulaschoice.com/beautypedia-product-reviews/animal-testing/

How does the Beautipedia information compare to the information on the Leaping Bunny, My Beauty Bunny and Cruelty-Free Kitty websites (these sites were mentioned in several othe Beauty forum threads that I looked through):

http://www.leapingbunny.org

http://www.mybeautybunny.com

http://www.crueltyfreekitty.com

Thanks!! Smiley Happy

I try hard not to buy products that aren't cruelty free.  I am not 100% perfect yet, but am 99%.  Once in a while, I forget or it is just that companies are bought out and such and it is hard to keep up.  There is no reason why products need to be tested on animals, I think that is a crime honestly, and talk about animal abuse.  If I want to use eyeshadow, then I will take the risk of having an adverse effect, I don't need an animal to take that risk for me.

Once I am done with products, I am going to do a complete overhaul of what I use.  I am going to replace with 100% cruelty free vegan products. I have a long way to go, but that is my goal.  I don't need animal products in my stuff either.

Whether you want to use cruelty free or not is, of course, your decision, but, at least, be aware of how things are made.

I am also moving toward fair trade stuff, etc., in all categories.  This I know will not be perfect but any change is a good one.
