Re: After shower my hair twists in the back when wet and tangles badly...

I have long-ish, straight hair.

I don't wash my hair in the shower, mainly because it tangles and I don't want to lean backward, afraid of falling.

So, I wash my hair in a medium rectangle kitchen dishpan.

I lean over the sink, shampoo.  Let the shampoo sit in my hair by wrapping a flour sack towel around my head.

Then, ten or more minutes later, I keep rinsing out the shampoo.

Then, I add a capful of apple cider vinegar into the tub of clear water, which de-tangles my hair and makes it very smooth and clean.

Keep in mind that my faucet spout is tall and rinses out my hair / head quite well.  I move my head from side to side in order to rinse all of the shampoo out from my temples and back of my head.

Hope this suggestion helps someone.

Simple solution. Cut your hair short. Problem solved.

@SandGirl  -  What about a cut slighty above your shoulders - like Pat Dementri?  You could blow it dry with a rough brush all over.

I know you mentioned right below the shoulders.  How about a little shorter?  Then you wouldn't have to deal with rolling it everyday.

Re: After shower my hair twists in the back when wet and tangles badly...

@San Antonio Gal   Thank you!! I'm just not ready for above shoulders yet, maybe someday, I've NEVER in my entire life (other than being an infant) has my hair been above shoulder length. I'm just not ready for that.

When I talked to my hairdressor the last time she told me good thing my hair isn't short, it would just look inverted all the time, the hair right against my scalp in the back goes kinky during the day no matter what I do to pull it straight, if it gets any amount of moisture or heat it goes back to curly underneith and pulls my hair up in the back making it look like the middle of my head hair is shorter, its hard to explain.  So, shorter would make me look like I have inverted and no way do I want that or like that look.  When its longer you really do not notice it at all.

@SandGirl

You are so right about the weight of longer hair holding down curls. Curls and waves automatically make you hair shrink in length.

Re: After shower my hair twists in the back when wet and tangles badly...

@SandGirl   My hair was always thicker and wavier underneath and straighter from my ears up to crown.  still has a bit of a wave.  it has thinned quite a bit tho.

When I was younger the underneath area was SUPER thick and wavy. After shampoo, I put on conditioner and combed through - still with water running then used a wide tooth comb and then rinsed.  It was the only way to fight tangles. My hair was sooo tangled otherwise.

At the Maxx I just found a Living Proof In-Shower Styler and going to try that for air-drying.

You poo/condition, rinse, the apply the Styler and rinse again quickly. then air dry and scrunch.   Going to try it today.

My hair is long,  but I no longer like it getting to bra length. I cut it myself every few weeks or so because a simple trim cost is $90 at the salon - tooo  $$$$ !  Youtube has many helpful DIY haircut videos.

@SandGirl   also,  I had chopped off my hair and cried for a month so never wanted to cut my hair short again either and after I turned 50 and started Biotin my hair got super long, past my bra. So don't cut your hair!!    I'm sure you  receive many compliments on your hairstyles!

Re: After shower my hair twists in the back when wet and tangles badly...

Hi @SandGirl

I am confused about what is the issue you are trying to address.  Is it hair tangling or hair texture?

Hair tangling if it happens, is just a matter of being patient and pulling hair out of the knot a little bit at a time.

I recently ran across an amazing video on you tube by  thehairgurucarla.  The video is called "Her hair hasn’t been combed in FOUR months" and the video shows the stylist patiently detangles.  It is a miraculous transformation, no video trickery because we see it.  I think that lady had birds living in her hair and carla does an amazing job.  She sells a detangler "THGC Detangler Spray" for $10/bottle.  Don't know how much the s&h, but if i was going through the unhapiness you describe, buying it would be a no-brainer.  I don't think the spray is a magic potion, but I recommend you watch the video to see Carla's technique.

If the problem is that your hair has different textures, maybe it will give you solace to know I have lived with that my all my adult life.  One side of my hair curls a little, the other is straight.  My hair does have body, so I either blow dry it straight or put curls in.  Make sure to use styling products.  That evens out the look.  My hair did not change with menopause, but my grey hair initially had its own different texture, and it was really hard when there were just little random kinky grey hairs here and there.  With color, the hair evened out.  And now with more grey, easier to style it so it has the same texture.

I recommend a small flat iron to pass through that small non-compliant strand of hair [if that is the issue].  This wasn't available to me when I started to go grey, but I always have it handy now, because there is always a stubborn strand of hair.  The small size makes it easy to maneuver to style small bits of stubborn non-compliant hair.  My most recent purchase is available at Amazon for $15, called "Wavytalk Mini Flat Iron 0.7 Inch Ceramic Small Hair Straightener".  I have had it for 4 years [same price!] and I use it regularly for small strands of non-conforming hair, now mostly the edges, which are shorter than my other hair.

Hope this helps!

@SandGirl

What you describe here is very common.  Moisture from sweat curls the hair it comes in contact with.

I would recommend an antihumectant for that.

I have used Aveda Brilliant Anti-Humectant Pomade to style my hair in high humidity for a long time.  Be careful when shopping for this, they also have a humectant product to induce curls.  This is a thick formulation, a little goes a long way, so just take a little bit, rub in your hands and apply.  My hair stylist used to use this product in my hair a long time ago, and I started buying it.  This was at the original Bumble & Bumble salon, before they started making products [1980s-1990s?].

He also used KMS hair styling gel, which is also still available.  Again, a little goes a long way.  Humidity resistant.

There is also Color WOW Dream Coat Supernatural Spray.  It is an award-winning anti-humidity treatment, gets a lot of great editorials.  I didn't like it, but maybe it works for you.

I also most recently purchased Oribe Impermeable Anti-Humidity Spray.  Love it, but I can't swear by it because I haven't had a good sweat in a while.

If your hair was shorter, the air circulation would reduce sweating and the problem in the back of the hair.

Hope this helps.

Since being past menopause the back of my hair is VERY wavy, thowards the middle in the back the hairs not only get super almost kinky curly but the curls don't pattern they TWIST and no amount of conditioner or leave in conditioner or even serums while wet seem to help with gently combing this out enough to get it blow dryer. My sides are stick straight, talk about frustrating!

Anyways, I've tried it all. I've even tried WEN for cleaning and using a TON for a leave in and it still does it.  I must have 15 bottles of conditioners and leave ins that claim to detangle under my sink. I use a wide tooth comb plus I have the wet brush and the wet brush for tangles. I tell ya, I've tried everything I can.

So, I'm just curious, beside chopping my hair off again (I've done it before), does this happen to anyone else when their hair gets past their bra line and if so, what works to detagle so I'm not losing so much hair each time I wash?

I would love to keep it long especially for summer but the tangles are just really causing me to lose hair I can't afford to lose.

@SandGirl   If you use too much conditioner it will dry your hair out.especially if it contains a lot of keratin.  I might try some JOICO k pak recomstructor. Once a month. Maybe an anti frizz conditioner.  Also when detangling the hair. Start in sections and start at bottom of hair.. slowly work tangles out with end of rat tail comb, little by little until you reach top then next section.  Also, try an overnight conditioner, night before washing. I use ALTERNA caviar overnight. Brush, comb hair before applying. Make sure to get back and ends.  Excellent. Make sure you have ends trimmed as well, even 3/4 inch.
