Advice on how much to use

I just received a set of five 6 oz bottles. When they say use 'x' pumps, do they mean push it all the way down or just part of the way? My hair is thin and fine and comes to my shoulder blades. Based on the pamplet that came with it, I should be using 40-48 pumps. (The bottle says to use 20 to 30+ pumps). I used 20 and my hair was plastered to my head and hard to work with. That used about 1/2 a bottle. Should I really have used the 40 plus pumps or does what I used sound right? Any thoughts would be appreciated.
