I used to dislike giving giftcards....but I find they seem less impersonal if you can give giftcards to their favorite restaurant, theater, or other places. The worst is a Visa card because they seems to reflect no thought whatsoever.

Gift cards specifically for a favorite restaurant, theater,or other place. They seem less impersonal, and I find we love getting them now more than we used to.

Definitely gift card for a  place they enjoy and frequent.  My birthday is coming up and my sister suggested an Amazon gift card -- I effusively agreed.  I love the gift card idea.

Just for fun, and different, I went a party and gave a clock that runs backwards, it is a unique item and a fun conversation piece.  They still have it hanging on their wall and do enjoy it.  I purchased it on Amazon.  It is not expensive, nor a serious gift, but one that brings laughter.

@crazered    DH and I love bed and breakfast retreats.  Depending on your budget perhaps a B&B weekend at a favorite spot would be a wonderful gift.
