@DSD2 . Oh boy, I had the nuns also. You did everything correctly or a big X went over your work and you did it over again. Whew! But as much as we complain, I think we learned a lot more. The kids today need the same. But that's not going to happen.

@threecees . The kids in the future won't have a no 2 pencil either. I still buy them lol.

I hate my handwriting. so I half/ print everything. i was the worst cursive student in my class. think i'm a bit dyslexic becuase I have goofed up so many words trying to write in cursive. When I write in a greeting card, I have to use pencil. to be able to erase. I misspelled my grandson's name the other day in his birthday card. Even writing my signature I've messed up letters.

Me too, @Iwantcoffee
Among other things, it keeps it "real'er" to me
The physical magnification of it.

I'm trying to remember the neighborhood kids at my former residence. I guess I hadnt been paying attention? When children hadnt been taught cursive, what do kids write down with pen/pencil, when they have to actually physically write, or sign something?
They/we often would do Art together, & I tried to encourage them to physically sign & date their own Artwork.

My dad took great pride in his penmanship (my mom did too) and actually excelled in calligraphy so when I first learned cursive he passed on that same sense of pride to me. I still use it when writing notes and short letters. Printing is an effort for me and not as pleasing to my eye.

@UpNorthGorgy wrote:How times change! I had a Penmanship on my report card grade in Elementary School. This is a sore subject with me as my 6th grade teacher told me... "Your handwriting will never make it!" All classrooms had those proper Cursive letters posted above the black boards.
So Middle School I printed and could print just as fast as writing. To this day I print but I can write in cursive. I hated capital G.for my first name, as thought it was such an ugly letter. I changed it to a large small g in my signature.
I see old papers, records, lists, account books, ledgers, letters even Civil War letters in such beautiful handwriting. It was such an Art.
@UpNorthGorgy You are right! It's hard to make a pretty capital G.!!!

Ha, @Sooner @UpNorthGorgy You're so right about non-pretty Capital G! ![]()
I guess along the way, I modified my own Cursive style in some cases. I merely enlarge a small cursive "g" & use it as a capital "Cursive G."
hmm Sometimes with an s, or S also, and r/R
Actually!, ![]()
since I elected to learn, & used "Italic calligraphy" to professionally address/write names on paying Customer's official Docs/Diplomas/Invites, (for earning some of my addt'l "mad spending money"), I've learned to take a few addt'l liberties with the original Cursive I was taught in Grade School. So I use a hybrid of "Italic Calligraphy-Cursive" handwriting now.
HA! I never took total stock of all of this!

I write everything in cursive except birthday cards for my grandchildren. They wouldn't be able to read it, and I think that's sad.

@Q-Checker I had a College Professor who said if you write it down you will recall it better, so true.

Difficult for me to write at all due to arthritis in my right hand
