I am one of those "always cold" persons.

I keep the a/c on 85° in the summer (May thru Oct).     In the winter (yes, it gets down to the 20's here), I use a space heater where I'm sitting.

Not to derail the topic, but consider taking cinnamon capsules nightly with dinner.  Cinnamon is a warming herb and it takes about a week and then you suddenly aren't always cold.

I was an avid skier for years and cinnamon capsules helped me stay warm out on the slopes!

Re: When do you switch from A/C?

I switch when the weather tells me. It is different every year.

We had record cold 2 weeks ago and many people turned on their furnace. I left mine off and was fine.

We're now having record high temps and I have my air conditioner on.

I don't mind changing it back and forth a as needed in the fall and spring.

We actually dropped to 68 last night!  First time this year

I'm in the upper midwest and it dropped to 64 last night but the humidity is off the chart. My air is still running.

We live in Oklahoma.  We have central heat and air, and go from one to the other all year long basically.  Our AC is on and ready to go all year, don't shut off heaters they are ready to go all time too.

We keep house at about 76-77 in the summer.  Winter about 72 if I remember.

This is exactly how it works for us, too. Here on the Gulf Coast it's still summer and the AC will be running till November, maybe longer. We'll toggle the switch to heating if we get a cool spell in Dec and then heating will kick on and off during Jan and Feb.  Central AC and heat.

Re: When do you switch from A/C?

I leave my AC on until daytime highs dip below 70.  If there are a few cooler days before then and I choose to open the windows, I do not turn the AC off instead I just raise the temp for it to go on so it won't come on. I was advised to just raise the temp on my thermostat instead of turning it on and off which is not good for the unit itself.

Re: When do you switch from A/C?

To me, this isn't an "either / or" with furnace or AC.

If it's 95 degrees on Thanksgiving Day the air conditioner will be turned on, even if it was very cold the week before.

I think you need to respond to the weather, not the date on the calendar.

@JoyFilled Warrior

I don't know what they're called and I think it's a gas HVAC system but are you talking about a system that you run one or the other system?  I'm not sure I've explained that good enough.  We have an electric heatpump.  One unit.  With the thermostat, we turn on/off either heat or air and can switch back and forth at will.  Is that how yours works?  It will probably be Dec when we turn on the heat for the first time this season.  Next day it could be AC again.  It's probably late Dec before it's on heat for the rest of the season.  I doubt that is typical.  I run hot!  My north bedroom window is open from sometime in late Oct.  It's refreshing to open the windows after they've been closed for 9 months.

Re: When do you switch from A/C?

yeah, @monicakm.  It's a device installed on the wall, with toggle from "Heat" or "Cool."  Then, hike up/down setting for the specific temp number.  HTHs

Re: When do you switch from A/C?

We do not have central air in our house..a permanent wall unit in the family room and a removable one in the master bedroom.

As soon as the weather cools we shut them off and open the windows!

Re: When do you switch from A/C?

Thank y'all for such wonderful, helpful responses.

Seems such, this year's, so far, overcast, excessive rains, flooding,  ---  along with dancing temps,  & now, extraordinary sensitivity to humidity around here & this facility, have caused challenges in attempting to find the happy settings.  Lotsa great info offered.  Appreciated.  Woman Happy
