Watch what the clerk is doing!

First of all I never buy cold cuts that my supermarket pre- packaged "as grab and go...store wrapped..no waiting" at least I thought!

DH likes sliced roast beef..I waited on line and ordered 1 lb.$15.99lb... I found out the hard way..All the pkgs. that aren't sold from the pre-sliced counter..has to be used up..DON"T give it to me!!!

The girl took one of the left over pkgs. put 2 FRESH slices on top of what she put on the scale and tried to give it to me as "freshly sliced"!! I refused to take it..It must have happened to me before..I thought the meat went bad pretty fast in my refrig.

Of course I looked for a manager..none to be found..

I called the corporate office to complain..

I was told "She wasn't supposed to do that" the left overs are supposed to be used in sandwiches!!!!!!..So beware of "store made" sandwiches and watch the clerk!

This is at a fairly large chain store up here..

Re: Watch what the clerk is doing!

@Jo1313  I always watch them slice it.  Many years ago,  the clerk behind the counter was going to do the same thing but I immediately stopped her and asked that the meat be freshly sliced.  She had no issue with that.   We PAY ENOUGH for this,  and the prices keep skyrocketing ...  it should be freshly sliced.

I applaud you for taking it further.

@Jo1313.  It sounds like what my local ShopRite does.  The store packaged stuff is sliced thickly and is in large packages.  I live alone and just want a small amount sliced thin.

Can't go to the deli counter and order.  Must order on the tablet screen they installed or use an app on your phone!  No thanks.  I can live without the cold cuts.  There are lots of other things I can make for lunch.

If I do buy colds cuts and sliced cheese I now go to a local deli.  They seem to appreciate my business.

@Jo1313  I always get fresh sliced.  I bought the presliced in a rush the other day and it was bad.  Had to return it to get my money back.  Never again.  The clerk told me that item isn't even cut in the store...they ship it in.

Re: Watch what the clerk is doing!

Many years ago I worked in the produce dept in a large grocery store over my college summer break.

We would take all the rotting fruit, cut away the bad parts and put the rest on the fresh fruit bar. People paid inflated dollars per pound for that cut up fruit

I have never encounter that.  The grocery stores in my area the pre-sliced meat is outside of the meat counter and not easy for the clerk to see anyway.  I have never even had them suggest getting cold cuts from the pre-sliced section.  They always slice when asked.

Stores and restaurants use everything every scrap they can. They can't make money if they don't.

@Jo1313   I can remember when the worst thing the deli clerks were known for is putting their thumb on the scale.  In fact, that's what I thought this thread was going to be about.  But I definitely agree with you about not giving you the freshly sliced meat.

I would give everything I own just to have you back again.......David Gates of Bread

Re: Watch what the clerk is doing!

Yesterday, I went grocery shopping.  My DH  asked me to get fresh sliced deli meat for sandwiches....

I was $15 to $18 a lb!  Yikes.

Nope, nope and no.  I can buy a chicken, roast beef, or ham and cook and slice it myself for way less than.  That is expensive for processed meat.

The same products were $8 ro $10 a lb a month ago.  Check your prices.
