I have a Hoover Wind Tunnel vac that takes bags that I bought in 1997. It still works. I keep it in the garage, and use it to vacuum my car.

However, we installed a central vac when our current house was built. So easy to use.

I have 2  Shark corded bagless..They are OK..

My best and favorite vacuum is my Mom's 1950's grey round canister bagged GE and it still has the Good Housekeeping seal on it!..I use it in the basement and garage( it weighs a ton)..I couldn't just toss it..I've been patching the hose..can't find another hose...It still works better than my bagless.

I will not use a vacuum without a bag.  I still have my Oreck from QVC.

I own a few vacuum cleaners.  I have them at home, my summer place and in our RV.

I have four bagless vacuums.  I prefer them to the ones with bags.  I vacuum a lot....have two dog who shed and I  have waist length hair.  I don't wash my vacuums...I just empty the canister and use a cloth to wipe it out. One vacuum has a filter that I replace about once a year.  The other three have washable filters, but I only have ever washed one filter.  I just use my hair dryer to blow out the dust about twice a year.

I hate buying bags. They are expensive, sometimes hard to find and wasteful. And, if I accidentally vacuum up something, I hate cutting up the bag and fishing through the dust and hair. Yuck!

@Carmie We all hate that, but don't you still have to fish around in the dust and hair of the receptacle in your bagless if you accidently vacuum something up?

I was never tempted by bagless vacuums because I have an allergy to house dust and need a HEPA filter - not possible without a bag.  Like many others have said here, I have an Oreck that is still going strong.  Actually, now that I think of it, I have a smaller Oreck HEPA vacuum with a shoulder strap as well. For really small clean-ups I do have a Black & Decker hand held which works well but I absolutely hate emptying it.  I just don't want to see the yucky stuff that gets vacuumed up.  I'm team bags.

Nope.  The canisters in the bagless models hold less than the bags.  I can just pop open the canister, dump out the contents and pick up what I need. The contents are loose and not packed down.  My canisters are clear and I can see into them. So if I hear somthing hard being picked up, I can see if I to retrieve it, or let it go.

The bags pack the hair and dust tight as a brick. They hold a lot. If the bag is full, you have to tear through the contents separating the gunk searching.  If not full, it's easier, but you have to ruin the vacuum bag and throw it out....wasting your money.

And sometimes I remember doing that to see what was picked up and it was something that was trash anyway.  We all know that sound when you pick up something that makes a racket.

@shoesnbags   There are many HEPA filter bagless vacuums on the market.  I too, have allergies.  I just dump my canister outside into a trash receptacle.

Dyson, Shark and Meile make vacuums with a sealed HEPA filter.  A HEPA filter only keeps the dust from escaping while using the vacuum with or without the bag.

@Carmie I haven't needed to buy a vacuum in quite some time, so that's nice to know.  But I still don't want to deal with emptying a bagless vacuum. Just my preference.

We still have our OLD Electrolux which my husband loves.  I do not.  I don't like dragging that HEAVY canister around.  I have a Shark which is ok and a Bissell featherweight which I use ALOT.  Amazing how it picks up (not for heavy duty cleaning...) and it is easy on my back. Cleaning the bagless is dusty but I guess there is a tradeoff ...Cleaning is a bore and a chore!!
