@Mom2Dogs, I've been there, so know what a pain your project has turned out to be. I'm sorry.

In the future, I HIGHLY suggest using Sherwin Williams Extreme Bond Primer. That stuff will stick to anything & your paint will easily adhere for good. It's such a time saver!

I used it to cover heavy, laminate cupboards 10 years ago, & there is nary a nic or scratch...& I'm rough on things.

@sabatini   Thanks for the recommendation, the only product I was aware of was KILZ.

I was so ticked yesterday, what was to be a fun, quick project has turned into a mess.

@sabatini   I have a small three drawer piece that I painted years ago, paint took just fine then I decided I wanted a different color...that paint would not stick!!  I have been trying to clean that piece up since last year...it has been sitting in my garage, so I will use the primer you recommended on that...once I get it smooth.  I have never had so much trouble with paint before.

I know I am not doing anything different and always use decent paint, I can't figure out what the problem is.

I am going to try the chalk paint that was recommended.

I did a whole metal patio set with chairs with just this stuff. I washed and sprayed. Granted its outdoor furniture i bought for $35 used so i was not particular. Was no way I was sanding anything . Comes in tons of colors

No, I've not seen that, but Annie herself has lots of videos.  I did an orange to pink ombe corner cabinet that I followed from her directions.  It turned out so beautiful that I've been asked to do several pieces for others' to do exactly the same.

What I like the most is, low to no toxicity.  I'm done with harsh chemicals, sanding dust and off-gassing for what goes in my home-- as much as possible.  Same for my loved ones.Heart

@Mom2Dogs, I do keep a can of chalk paint around too, though just to use as a primer. It comes in handy when you need to paint over something.

I did go through a chalk paint period, though tired of it. Since I'd originally used wax to coat the pieces, before repainting them I primed w/ more chalk paint. Then top-coated w/ some satin latex paint.

That Sherwin Willaims bonding stuff is amazing....& I'm considering using it to prime a countertop. Now, that's a commitment! Smiley Very Happy

Good luck, @Mom2Dogs, & please keep us posted.

@Mom2Dogs I restored two tulip chairs.  Both very old.  I sanded down the chairs as best as I could.  I used Rustoleum with primer spray paint and they turned out very nice.

I painted one fire engine red and the other a royal blue and bought colourful cushions for the seat.  They look like summer!

These two pieces as well as an older living room chair I had reupholstered came from DH's grandfather's cottage.  I loved the look of the old living room chair with beautiful wood arms which was in tatters.  The reupholstered job was very well done.  Family could not believe how well it turned out.

Good luck.  Would love to see before and after photos.
