RED NEXT TO BLACK, VENOM LACK
This was made to let people know which one you're dealing with because they're stripped. Most poisonous animals/plants have benign mimics.
Throughout the US, rattlers live but in the desert areas and I think the warmer states they must be plentiful enough to be seen. I live in the northeast so I've never seen any. However, the deer are coming to us because their habitat is disappearing. I'm afraid of seeing black bears, and alot of people I know live within close proximity to them. Yes, you are right. ALWAYS protect yourself and your pets!!!!!
@77yangya. Are you kidding? The desert is full of rattle snakes. I live in the desert and have never seen one but they are thick on the local golf course where they have more cover and prey. The City of Big Spring in West Texas has an annual rattle snake round-up. It's rough, hilly, rocky desert. Harris County, where Houston is located, has every type of poisonous snake found in the US. I imagine @Shanus has both rattle snakes and copperheads in her neck of the woods. She was brave to tackle the one in her yard, but hey....you do what you gotta do.

We have a small black rat snake - non poisonous - that hangs out in our backyard a lot. I've seen him catch geckos so he is a buddy of mine. When he's around there are way less geckos crawling all over everything, and less toads & frogs too.

I am so creeped out reading all this. I saw Snake repellant granules in Walmart. I want to buy a truck load and coat my yard.

@chiclet - Please read the label carefully if you do intend to use them. Remember, birds are also affected by things put on the ground as they pick for bugs/worms. Toads are also around the house as well.

@Kachina624 Brave? I almost messed my pants & I sweat through my tee shirt. After the deed was done, the snake had landed over the fence and slithered away, I needed a drink, but usually only drink wine. This called for a real cocktail. I didn’t know how to make any. I remembered my Dad used to have “vodka on the rocks” (as a kid I thought it’d always be real rocks, not ice cubes). I climbed on the counter to get the vodka and poured some over ice. Oooooh! I burned going down, but in few minutes, I felt more calm...20 minutes after that, DH found me asleep on the couch...a real lightweight. That’s why I stay w/ wine.
