Dog has congestive heart failure

My 10-year-old little Shorkey, Max, started coughing a few days after his grooming, and I suspected it might be kennel cough although I had never heard it before. Took him to the vet, only to find out that he has congestive heart failure.   He is now on meds and has to return for another x-ray and blood work to see if the meds are working.  Is anyone familiar with this? 😢

Re: Dog has congestive heart failure

yes my boxer who passed away because of cancer.  If you have a veteinarian in the area who specializes only in cardiac problems, please seek a consultation.  I did and she put him on medicine and he was perfect after the medicine.  A cardio vet has more expertise than a regular vet and can over all types of medicine.  Did your dog have an ultrasound

If you're in driveing distance of Greenville, SC, that unbelieveable animal hospital is there!   It's up from the TD Convention Center, formerly the Palmetto Expo Center.  Upstate Vetenary Specialists.

If anything can be done, they can!  Amazing!

@KACEE1115 ..... if he didn’t have the cough before the grooming do you think the groomer did something to cause this to happen? .... congestive heart failure can be caused in people & animals if fluid or food accidentally goes down the throat into the lungs instead of the stomach etc., ... I hope Max recovers quickly 😍

My shih tzu was diagnosed with it when he was about 12.  With the help of the proper meds he lived to age 17.

Most larger metro areas have clinics with specialty vets.  The ones I saw at the Albuquerque VCA Specialty Vet Clinic were internists but they had all kinds of specialists.  They were wonderful but expensive.

I have a 16 1/2year old dachsund that was diagnosed with congestive heart failure 2 years ago. He takes 3 meds - enalapril, vetmedin, and lasix. Lately though, he pants more than he used to.

Re: Dog has congestive heart failure

I, too noticed our dog’s cough after grooming and thought kennel cough. But, no, it turned out to be the same heart issue you all are talking about. Sam is taking Hycodan for the cough and Vetmedin, each 2x a day. I will ask about any other meds discussed, though, just to cover all bases. I love that everything is discussed on these blogs. So helpful❣️

No, just X-rays and blood work.
