I don't let people I don't know in my home. Never. To risky.

I hire a man from the local Catholic Worker House to do some outside work for me on occasion. He gave me his phone number and I call him every time I need some help. Still, took a year of hiring him before I let him in my house.

I wouldn't hire some strange guys who hang out in a parking lot!  There no circumstances under which I would do such a risky thing.  If you have people in your life, reach out and ask for help.  Maybe call a small mover.  Maybe speak with your pastor and ask if someone from church could help.  If you have neighbors, maybe ask for help.

I would hire insured movers in your area. Get references and a quote. Make sure they wear masks, wrap your furniture, etc. I had a small move recently and the movers were amazing. I used You Move Me. They didn't charge me as much as the quote because it didn't take as long as expected. I tipped them guys the difference. There are so many moving horror stories. I don't know who those guys are but no.

I haven't read all the responses, but I want to say that I've used those workers a couple of times.  Hard working people looking for a job, rather than a hand-out. The only thing I would say is to have someone else there with you - always a good idea.

You are right, they are there, bright and early, too.

I've never personally used them, but know many people who have and they would again, I've been told.

The only time I used a stranger (well, strangers) was when a refrigerator died at one of our rentals on a 4th of July weekend.

My husband was over 2000 miles away.  So it was on me....

I went to Home Depot and bought the fridge.  They told me that it couldn't lay down in the back of my SUV because it would have to be upright or something.

I had to rent a HD open back truck and drive it into this tiny beach town that had thousands of people stumbling walking around that night.

I'd taken $50 cash out of an ATM and flashed it at two guys that were walking down the street close to the end of the driveway and asked if they could move the old fridge out and put the new one in.  Luckily we had a dolly in the garage.  They jumped at the offer.

For something that could've been so stressful, I pulled it off like a hitch.  My renters were thrilled and so was I.  I hooted and hollered the whole way out of Dewey Beach!

We need to move furniture and boxes in our home.  I am considering hiring a couple of guys who are in the Home Depot parking lot to assist with the moving.  Have you ever done this.  Do you have any suggestions for what I should pay?

Thank you for any feedback.

NEVER choose people waiting in parking lots - not safe.

Ask friends/neighbors for recommendations.

You can fill any service with Angie's List.  They have been researched and have references.

Gone are the days of "Do you know someone good who........."!

Stay away from Angie's List and other similar companies. They have no idea who they send out - plus they overcharge.

You could post on nextdoor dot com for referrals. It's the best way to find service people - from neighbors.

Re: RE: Help with moving

In the year 2001 we put in an addition on our main level floor. We hired 2 Men and a Truck to move the king sized bed, dressers, etc from  third floor to main level areas . It was a pleasant experience. We are so glad we did that. Some time you have to spend a little money to get want you want.

We made sure there were snacks for them. Made sure they took breaks. I color coded the pieces of furniture to be moved which made it easier for them. Also tipped them.

On another note we are so glad we put in that addition. I recently had knee surgery and it is great to have things on one floor.
