I know you decided to tip and that was very nice.
For me, I wouldn't have tipped them. They charged you a price for the service they provided and that's what I would pay them.
I recently had someone tile my bathroom shower. He gave me a price to complete the job, I paid the price and wouldn't have even considered giving him a tip on top of what I paid to have the job done.
To me, both scenarios are the same.
Now movers.....I would tip them.

@Lipstickdiva Why would you feel moved to tip movers( I would suppose you were also charged for the service they provide - moving and lifting and such... but not moved to tip landscape crew who are also providing a service that involves manual labor... I do not see the difference other than what they are doing.

I feel that when you hire landscapers, the price takes into consideration the time involved, materials that will be used, etc.
With movers, they don't really know exactly all that is involved with moving you until they arrive at your home. Plus they are taking care of some very personal items you may have a big emotional attachment to.
If we are talking about a cross country move with a big company like say North American Van Lines, I actually wouldn't tip because you already are going to be paying a premium. But if we are talking local moving company, for some reason I'd feel like that is a tipping situation.
I'm not really sure why I feel they are different. LOL

My "yard crew" does a great job and they are so cheap. I am on 3 acres (about half needs mowed) and they roll in with two zero turn mowers and 3 guys - one cuts the front and sides of the house, the other the back and the third pulls weeds and weed wacks and they are in and out in a half hour. I tip bc they are very cheap and they do a good job.
I just had 2 home improvement guys come to clear up the items on my home inspection report and they did the work on days the temp/humidity hit that "feels like it's 105 degrees" while they were here. Not only did I provide cold water for them, I went out and made them stop and take water breaks - bc one of the jobs was to put a new roof on a large shed I have here. That heat and the black shingles they were using made it much hotter on the roof - I didn't want to have anyone get dehydrated or sick. I felt the price charged for all they did was fair but I'd asked them to do a few simple things I didn't want to tackle and when I paid them - I gave them $50 extra than what was on the bill.

@SeaMaiden ... I don't know. It seems like we're getting to the point where we tip everyone. Should we tip landscapers? I don't tip the plumber or the electrician. Providing water and access to a bathroom seems like enough to me.
I have a neighbor who works on a crew that does that kind of work. He told me last summer that one couple provided lunch for the crew, but other than that, people don't usually do anything extra. Maybe locales make a difference.

Good Morning @Yardlie I really think there should not be a group of those who we are suppose to tip and those who we do not. Who in the heck figures out these lists?
For me it is done by my heart. Of course IF I ATE OUT AT A RESTAURANT today, I would tip as it is expected for the most part, but I do not think a waitress deserves a tip any more or less than a landscape crew person. In fact to me they both deserve a $$thank-you$$ of some kind. For me it comes from the heart if I tip. The older I get, I find I want to tip more often just to make someone's day a bit more special. THAT gives me JOY ![]()

I hired a landscaper 5 or 6 times over the years for various projects. I'd get an estimate before the job and mailed a bill. I didn't tip. It didn't occur to me to tip.
I moved across country with national movers three times. I bought them lunch.

Tip the UPS guy? Those guys are union, they are doing just fine. Nothing against unions by the way, DH was in one. I'm not against the occasional sandwhich bag of cookies or a Christmas remembrance. I do tip my hair stylist and restaurant servers very well, they aren't making that much in base wages.

Just an aside, not all UPS guys are union. Many of the delivery personnel are temp. employees, especially around the holidays.
