That was not a therapy dog or a service dog.   That was just a pet and they maybe are calling it an emotional support animal.  For a while people were passing off their pets as emotional support animals.  You could print a fake card off the internet and vests but that's over now.  Businesses know better.

I remember when that happen and it upset me, because mine was an actual one and they could check with Kaiser if there was any question. Like I said, I paid over 200 to make my a Therapy Dog. We were both Volunteers at Kaiser hospital.

Re: Question about therapy animals

Therapy dogs are considered to be regular pets, not service dogs, in the eyes of businesses.  Costco stores in my city do not allow pet dogs in their stores including therapy dogs.

Re: Question about therapy animals

When my mother started going downhill mentally (dementia), she had my daughter help her get "papers" stating her poodle was an emotional support dog. I think that might have been stretching it, but maybe not.  She took him everywhere and no one complained.  Jake is still alive and lives on my dad's lap or at the foot of his bed in the assisted living facility.

Re: Question about therapy animals

When initially registering to move into this Complex, the original Leasing Agent happened to ask me if my rescue "Sweetie" kitty is an "Emotionally Support Animal."  I smiled and said, "not officially,"  not even realizing there is such a bonafide distinction.

If this Agent hadnt asked, & esp explained this, I would never have known abt it.

Otherwise, I would have had to pay an Up Front Fee for my "Sweetie" (?$100/yr) and additionally pay monthly Rent for her - I think $35/mo.  So online, I registered her with one of the "Emotionally Support Animal" organizations, & provided that paperwork, & Vet shots proof to my Complex, and other than that organization's fee, all my Complex's Pet Fees were waived.

Just seemed like the path of least resistance, & least expense.

And just so happens, my rescue Sweetie is sooooo very happy here, finally, like ALL my many other prior kitties, she's taken to sleeping beside my bed pillow with me.  She loves it here!  Cat Very Happy

@Kachina624  Great explanation.  My one collie was a certified pet therapy dog. We visited nursing homes and other types of facilities.

@JoyFilled Warrior.  In addition to deceiving your apartment complex you exercised dishonesty which is why nobody can now use that designation.

@cindyNC.  I know a Collie that is familiar with every children's book in our public library as the kids read to him.

Wow! For someone who has a TLB reference as their signature, sounds like you need to review the basics. Does "thou shall not steal" ring a bell?

Re: Question about therapy animals

Some stores are starting to crack down on their animal policies.  Some no longer allow "service" dogs because of the perceived ambiguous definitions.  Seeing eye dogs only in many stores now.

However, actual enforcement of that rule seems to be lacking.  So just having a rule doesn't seem to have made much difference.
