I had considered having new foam put into the seat cushions of my couch. The upholstery shop told me never to get rid of my couch as it was really well made, great fabric, etc..so we discussed the new foam...My cushions are pretty high/thick and not the norm for today.
New luxury foam was $1000.00 for two new cushions. I decided just to buy new...it was time for a change.

Thanks! I didn't know that....I used to love shopping in consignment stores. I found very nice items, however, once Bed Bugs became an issue I haven't been in one. There are a few very nice ones in my area.

In our town (11000 permanent; 33000 during Summer season) there are many Garage/ estate/moving sales and they post pics on Next door and Craigslist. Its not difficult to find high quality furniture ( including lots of guest bedroom furniture that's barely used). My Son bought a recliner that was nearly new for $25 and there are many dinette sets in $100-$300 range ( several each week).

@ScrapHappy wrote:We bought the last of our furniture right before Covid. When we moved, we went from 1500 square feet to 7000 square feet. Lots of rooms didn't have furniture in our new home for some time (also because it had to be painted). I thought furniture was pricey then, I'd hate to see what it would cost now. We bought one bedroom set from Rooms To Go, another from Ashley and also bought family room set. Living Room and another bedroom set from Haverty's. I didn't also find Rooms To Go the cheapest in price so look around. Labor Day weekend sales are coming up and that usually has been a good time to buy. If there is a Haverty's near you, they also have outlet stores. I've gone to estate sales (into people's home) and seen some nice furniture for sale.
@ScrapHappy We're doing the opposite....going from 5500 sq. ft. (almost 6000 if count my studio space above the garage). From that to 1400-1500 for a 2 bedroom is impossible to think about.
We need to stay in a complex w/o students. They take a 2 bedroom and fit 4 people in there w/ parties, friends coming and going, too. It's difficult in a college town. Now that students are back, we can get a feeling by driving by & see where there are more adults and less kids.

@Shanus. One word of advice. Keep all of your old stuff that's serviceable because the new that they're selling at reasonable prices is of atrocious quality. Much is like disposable furniture. Wood furniture is out of sight in price and often not even real wood.
Where will you do your painting and crafts? You're going to have quite an adjustment.

Are there 55-plus communities in your town or close by, @Shanus?

I inherited my mom's Heywood Wakefield furniture. (1940's and 50's era). OK...it's pecan "blonde" wood......but the stuff is worth THOUSANDS (per piece).
I "re-programmed my brain" to love blonde wood (!!) di

I just purchased a manual leather recliner sofa and an automatic recliner leather loveseat very pricey
And I purchased a solid wood bedroom set. I purchased bed, 2 nightstands, dresser with no mirror and chest of drawers. I couldn't believe the bed counts as 3 pieces and now the mirror is sold separately on the dresser. Also, very expensive but hopefully the last set I'll have to buy.

We bought a leather recliner sofa for the motorhome last year, it was so expensive! We had a leather sleeper sofa in the motorhome but it was not comfortable, I mentioned that we were selling it on one of the RV facebook groups and a gent reached out immediately, drove to our house the next week and bought it, so that helped ease the pain a bit.
