I also have a mom and pop furniture consignment store close to me.  She has some great things.  Found the perfect chest of drawers for my sewing room.  Probably from the 1940s.  It is solid.  The wood alone at today's prices would be triple the $200 a paid for it.  Of course she has newer things, too.  Look or Google around where you are or where you will be.

Keep what you can of the old - it will be better quality. Go with storage systems for the closets.

@Mom2Dogs   I have been looking for a new couch.  If you like your old one, you may want to hang on to it and put the high quality foam.  Old fashioned 8 way hand tied sofas with high quality foam are hard to find and cost thousands.  Most furniture now that one finds at a regular furniture store is designed to last 5 years at most.

Lots of honest info at insidersguidetofurniture dot com.

I purchased a beautiful Ralph Lauren sofa at a reputable store and it lasted only about 2 years.  I was very angry!

@NYCLatinaMe    The couch I purchased came with  a great warranty and the fabric is warranteed for quite a while as well., so I think I wlll be OK but I do realize there is some pretty cheeply made furniture on the market.

I did not know what a 'Bob's Furniture' store was so when DH and I went to the city we stopped in and looked around...furniture looked OK but the price was $499.00 for most couches...I cannot imagine how that would hold up!!

@Mom2Dogs   I paid thousands for my Ralph Lauren sofa that lasted less than 5 years, which is why I was angry.  Price may not be indicative of quality.

@Desertdi.  I had my aunt's Heywood Wakefield drop leaf coffee table.  I hated the blonde wood (birch i think) and refinished it.  Probably ruined its value.  It must have stayed in the house with my ex when I moved out.  Haven't thought about it for years.

I have a few La-Z-Boy items and all are still hanging in there. The oldest is at least 24 yrs old. Bought the year after we got married.

@Shanus  Search online for nearby estate sales and estate auctions. They virtually give away good solid furniture, often in excellent condition. As was already noted, so much better than most of the junky furniture being sold by big box stores and even by some higher end stores.

@Shanus  Sam's Club, Costco, Living Spaces & American Furniture Warehouse are possible options for decent prices & quality
