Re: Out of Touch with Children

My trucker daughter deals with this nearly every day, from young and old alike!  She gets a lot of surprised looks when the people in the car realize the truck is being driven by a female.

@RedTop    What does your daughter say about the supposed shortage of truck drivers, and if there is one, the reason for it?

Trucking school is expensive, with no financial assistance.

Trucking school is HARD; my daughter started class with 9 males; 1 female and 3 males graduated.

Many would be truckers can't pass the random drug tests or don't have a good driving record.

Many truckers with CDL want day jobs and to be home at night.

My daughter knew she wanted to do long haul trucking, and still loves it.   She has trained many drivers who quit after their first run because it wasn't what they expected.   They didn't realize there was much more to the job than just driving, like extensive paperwork, computer usage, rules, and deadlines, not to mention getting the products loaded just right on the truck.

Many wives don't want their husbands doing long haul runs unless the company can pair them with another male driver.

My daughter works for a company that has east coast and west coast drivers, but no specific day run drivers.   Many of their senior drivers have retired, and new hires don't usually last thru their training period.

During the height of COVID, my daughter and many others who haul a designated food product had their runs affected by plant shutdowns.

And these are just the things I know about!

No idea why the print got smaller!

@RedTop    There was a thread a few days ago where people were wondering about the things you mention.  I'd wondered if many of the drivers had retired during the height of the pandemic.  I imagine DD has been very busy.  It's a good thing we have her and many like her.

@On It  I know I'm not young (very far from it), however, I've never seen or heard of what you've described.  This could simply be because I grew up in the city?  Don't know.  It's "new" to me.  I will ask a few people I know if they are familiar with this chlld's play.

Hope the little guy had fun.....

For a brief period of time in my early 30's, I did consider going to truck driving school.

But, the cost put me off, and the thought of driving on icy roads scared me. After having watched many episodes of "Highway Through Hell" about the tow truck operators in British Columbia, Canada that work the Coquahalla (sp?) highway, and seeing some of those wrecks, put me off ever pursuing that as a career.

So, Mazel tov to your daughter! 😊 👍 👊 👏

Re: Out of Touch with Children

We use to do this when we were in the school bus on the freeway.  When we get close to a big rig, we all would pump our fists to get the driver to blow the horn.

It was always worked.  Fun times.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I5rXur7i9nc  Here's a you tube video where a trucker says he misses kids signaling trucks to honk their horns. We used to love doing it as kids.

The boy was asking cars to honk. We used to do this as kids too.

Re: Out of Touch with Children

It sounds like what we did as kids, to make the semi's passing, toot their horns.  So if this is a commercial, he may think all vehicles will do this to amuse him, as the trucker's did for us.
