Re: Medic alert type buttons

@Mindy D   Thank you for the Apple Watch information.  Do those features only work when used in conjunction with an iPhone?  Or is the Watch stand-alone?

I think many of you are living in an alternate universe and have no idea what it's like to be 80 years old.  First, many such people are on fixed incomes and could never afford a pricey Apple watch.  They mostly have limited, if any, computer skills and could never set up or use such a device.  Thirdly, 80 year olds often have diminished vision and could not see the icons or read the small print on a watch even with glasses.  If they were injured and/or confused, it would be doubly difficult.  I have a Fitbit watch and can't see its icons or print without getting my readers. think one of the telecommunication devices is a more practical solution for most people.  My Medicare supplement offers one free.  Others may have the same benefit.

@Kachina624

I agree with you about the watch .

I'm 81  and my eyesite  is like you mentioned not as good with my glasses on  and  worse worse without them if i fell! or something happened to me in the middle of the night and not be able to see without my glasses on!

and same for setting up electronics.

For example

My grandson gave me a lighted computer keyboard for Christmas as i liked the colors   in his....but its still in the box as its a gaming keyboard  and i don't know how to follow the complicated instructions.

I need to call and ask him to set it up for me.

Re: Medic alert type buttons

My heart goes out to you, how difficult it must be without him.  I have a friend in her 70's, who is still married, but has a degenerative disease which effects her speech and her balance.  She and her husband discussed all options and they just got a Life Alert for her.  They are tech savvy, but thought this would be best.  There is a monthly fee, but if she falls, the closest EMS is sent, no matter where she is.  If she drops the Life Alert or something like that, she can call and no one will be sent,, she gets 6 of those a month at no charge.  I really don't know anything else, but trust that they chose a good option.  Please take care of yourself!

I've often wondered how anyone could read those tiny icons and little letters or numbers on an emergency watch. Not sure I'd understand how to work such a confusing electronic, either.

At 73, I am unable to read things on my cell phone without glasses using the largest type. Therefore, I use my landline which can be used without my glasses anytime day or night.

My cell is for me to use when I'm away from home (or in my car) and need help or travel information.  Only my family know the number and they do not call me on that number (unless it is an emergency).

ETA: I believe Life Alert is what most nursing homes use for the patients.

@Kachina624   Good point about computer skills to set-up an Apple Watch.  My mother has an iPhone but my brother set it up and there's no way she could set-up the watch herself.  My brother or I would have to do it for her. She's 86.

@89135    I don't have the device but read it's available in my benefits book. Thinking about calling for more information.
