May Flowers and New Life at the Bird's Nest: May 2024

Welcome Friends Old and New to the Bird's Nest for May.

We've had lots of rain here in SE Michigan and signs of new life are everywhere.  The grass is a lush deep green color, trees and shrubs are flowering and budding and the bird population is courting and preparing to grow their families.  I have two birdhouses that hang from the underside of the soffit of the garage and each has a sparrow couple that has been working hard to ready the house for babies.

If history repeats itself  I could be hearing the soft chirps of hatchlings by Mother's Day.

Among the trees is a bird's nest,

and in the nest her three eggs rest,

and in each egg, Hush, you'll be heard!

There lies asleep A tiny bird.

I'm always sad to see April go, but May sure is a beautiful month!  Here, we've had a Very Early Spring.  It's been anywhere from the 60s to upper 80s all last month.

We had equal parts sunshine and rain, so the trees, flowers and plants in my garden are growing like crazy!  I've already had fresh green onions and I'll have spring peas ready in close to ten days I'd say.

I wish it could stay springtime all year long!

@Bird mama

I'll bet we both will have our baby birds at the same time.  I have three small birdhouses with birds right now.  I've been watching as the father bird guards near the house while the mama flies out to get food I'm guessing.  Sometimes, I notice they take turns doing this.  I had no idea that male birds even helped out like this.❤️🌸

These birds are small and dark bright blue.  I'm not sure what kind they are?  The gorgeous yellow birds never nest in the houses.  They always go high up in the trees.  I know some of those have hatched because in the mornings we have what looks like 100 tiny yellow birds in the front yard.  As soon as they hear a sound, they fly immediately back up to the top of the tree.

While I was hunting mushrooms, I found a tiny egg that had been cracked just a hair.  I could tell a yellow bird was inside.  I felt terrible, but wondered how this egg got there?  It was right in the middle of the yard with no trees or nest around.  I took a picture of it.  I was gonna ask what people thought caused it to be here...but, I thought it might be too sad to post.😔

I would like to know though.

Re: May Flowers and New Life at the Bird's Nest: May 2024

I am dead-tired this morning, can't seem to force myself to get moving.
Rain was in the forecast for today, so I didn't really plan anything much, but so far, it doesn't look like rain will be anytime soon.
I think maybe I'll just take Luther for his walk in the park, then do some dusting. I've had windows open and the dust sure accumulates fast.
Mostly tho, I think today will be a rest day.
I hope you all have a nice day.

It's very important to have days for nothing but rest and relaxation.  I hope you have a wonderful day.😊💝🌸

The Robins keep trying to put a nest on top of our ceiling fan on the patio.

Every morning we get up they have started another nest. DH blows it off with the blower.

They can put a nest any place they want besides on top of our fan or in the gutter by the downspout.

We use our patio. DH cooks out a lot when it's hot. Not giving our patio to the birds.

DH now wraps a towel around the fan with a couple of clothespins. So far they are staying away.

The fan looks like this so I guess it's easy to make a nest on top of it.

@Bird mama

Hi Bernie  and my Birding Friends, I can't believe it's already May.  This year is warp-speeding by it seems to me.  I cut the grass for my yards and the neighbor's back yard yesterday.  Took almost 21/2 hours for all of it.  This was the second cutting already this year.  My tractor still had gas in it after all that cutting.  Wish my car got as much mileage.  We've had lots of rain here in Missouri and it was sorely needed due to last year's drought.  The big rivers are now at bankfull or flood stage.  More rain and storms supposedly heading this way.  Hope the storms are not severe.  It's been awful for so many people.

Next week I get to have another shot for the bone on bone osteoarthritis in my right hip and am hoping for a shot in the left hip as it's now just as bad as the right one plus both knees.  Nothing can be done for my back that I know of other than fusing the lumbar spine.  Don't want any surgery, most of all more spinal surgery.  NOT FUN!

The mock orange, peonies, columbines, hollies, and my Fringe tree are all blooming.  The air smells so sweet.  Am hoping the Grandiflora Magnolia will bloom soon.  Tulip trees are ready to bloom too.

Birds, as usual are eating me out of house and home. 🤩😏🐦 I heard "my'' cat bird, Kitty, the other evening.  She's back here early.  Love having catbirds here along with most of the others.  Not too fond of the number of brown headed cowbirds or grackles that have been hogging the feeders.

Have a safe and lovely afternoon. 🌞🌳🥰
