In my community the first communicants crown Mary at church. We are encouraged to have a personal alter at home. My neighbor has young children and I know they do this.
I remember leaving flowers for neighbors as well.

@SloopJohnB wrote:@cheriere We didn't do anything like the May Pole or some of the other interesting things you mentioned.... But on May 1st we always made a May Altar to the Blessed Mother. We had one at school and we did one at home. I would use the top of my vanity with the mirror portion down and have a vase of fresh flowers and a statue of Mary. We kept it up for the entire month. 🙏
I never got to participate in the May pile event either. I was surprised to learn of the tradition of the May baskets too. I think an altar to the Blessed Mother sounds just beautiful though.❤️

That brought back nice memories. I remember May Day celebrations and the May pole and dancing around it. We made flowers for our hair. And then. After 2nd or 3rd grade May Day ended. It was like it never happened.

@cheriere Thank you for sharing the fascinating history of May Day customs from different cultures.
The origins of holidays and how different countries celebrate
them has always been very interesting to me.
When I was in elementary school, I remember making paper May baskets in school and we filled them with paper fowers.
At Sunday school, we always had a May procession and were
usually dressed in our Easter dresses or other pretty dresses,
some in First Communion dresses.
May is my favorite month, being my birthday month. All the lovely flowers are starting to bloom in our yard. At this time, we only have Forsythia and Bleeding Hearts.
@Alsace Gal @GinaV24 I love Lily of the Valley, being the flower for May. Our hillside next to our front porch is covered with them. They are getting tall, but have not bloomed yet.
When they are in bloom, I open the front door to enjoy their amazing fragrance.
This coming week, I will post a picture of my Toni Doll in her First Communion dress.

@SloopJohnB@Marceil When I was young, we never had a May Day parade or May Pole. I do remember making May Baskets in school.
At Sunday school, we had a May procession for the month of Mary. I did the same as you did , making a little altar in my bedroom with flowers and a little statue of Mary, for the month of May.
May was also the month of First Holy Communions. Maybe this coming week, I will post a picture of my Toni Doll in her First Communion dress and veil.

@Nightowlz Today on The View, everyone on the show and in the audience was given a lei to wear. Performers from Hawaii
were on the show, playing Hawaiian music, while six dancers
performed the Hula. It was lovely.
May is the month dedicated to Asian Americans Pacific Islanders.
