My elementary school had a May Festival every year each grade preformed, all parents were invited and it was a big event. The girls and boys in the 6th grade had the opportunity to dance the May Pole. I was lucky to be awarded that opportunity, and I have very fond memories of the day.

What a wonderful memory to have of that day!đź’ť

@cheriere I recall one May Pole dance at our school. I was fascinated, but younger than the participants.

I was fascinated too.  My cousin who got to participate was older than me.  I guess I was about five.  Everything looked so colorful and magical, like something out of a fairytale.  It seems like the ballet class girls were wearing their costumes with fairy wings.

I never understood why my school never had the May Day celebration.  We had a fall festival.

My school had a big May Day celebration and we did the Maypole!  The whole school participated and we elected a King and Queen!  Great memories.

May Day is Lei Day in Hawaii we wore a muumuu with fabric just like this. We made lots of Lei's. We did different activities at school. I remember the May pole dance too. They had a parade. Liked watching the Hula Dancers. Loved the Hibiscus flowers in our yard. All the flowers are so beautiful.

I remember we used some type hawaiian vegetable to use as a stamp as a design on fabric.

@cheriere   We didn't do anything like the May Pole or some of the other interesting things you mentioned.... But on May 1st we always made a May Altar to the Blessed Mother.  We had one at school and we did one at home.  I would use the top of my vanity with the mirror portion down and have a vase of fresh flowers and a statue of Mary.  We kept it up for the entire month.  🙏

I would give everything I own just to have you back again.......David Gates of Bread

My siblings and I used to leave flowers at the neighbors' doors in the morning.

Stunning muumuu. Love your story of Lei Dat in Hawaii. I agree, I loved all the flowers and the fabulous scents there.

I never even heard of May Day until I was an adult. I’m still not clear I understand the traditions.

It was meant to honor the working class.

Hanging a small basket with a few flowers on someone's door was done when I was young.
