An iPad is not a grandma or a grandpa.

If you enjoy playing age appropriate activities with your grandchild, and talk to them and listen to what they say and respond to them and ask and answer questions, buy things that you and your grandchild can play with together, and play with them.

They will be learning and practicing language skills with you, and language is an important tool for learning in the early years of school.

The research about iPads for very young children is still in its early stages. Some research indicates good, some not so.

BUT WHAT GRANDMAS AND GRANDPAS KNOW IS-

An iPad is not as important to grandchildren as grandparents are.

I kind of got both sides, but since I have a VERY strong personal bias, I try to avoid repeating what I THOUGHT I heard, but I will say that there is SOME evidence that no child under the age of 2 needs or benefits from being introduced to tablets or tablet style phones, BUT a woman who introduced HER child to these devices at the age of 2 or so and chose not to limit her child's use finds that her son now uses his devices for four hours (or more?) every day, and she finds no problem with that for him.

I think the piece should be accessible, ONLINE of course, for those who look for it.

I continue to believe that anything can be a great servant but a terrible master.
