A few months ago I called Apple for a different reason, I asked  if there was anyway someone could hack into my iPad, the answer was no.

Fifteen years of using Apple products I've been safe.

Thank you.🌸. That's what I was thinking.
Ive never heard of an iPad being hacked.  I only come to this forum, no other social media.  I only search for normal stuff on google.  I've never used any of the "Free" software that was given with this iPad when I ordered it from QVC.  I did set it up, but I've never used any of it.  Heck, I don't even watch Netflix or anything on here.  I kept wondering how on earth it could've been compromised or hacked.

I really appreciate your taking the time to post this.  I was just afraid I wouldn't be able to log back in here lol.

Change your password now!  It may have been pushed to the dark web or hacked if you searched and clicked on something by accident.

It's only a huge deal if you ignore the message.

I just don't understand how my email address or password could've been compromised.  I don't go anywhere on my iPad but here.  I don't even use it to watch Netflix.  I only google normal things occasionally.

I do appreciate your taking the time to post this.  I'll go to my settings and see if it recommends I change it there.  Thank you again.💝🌸

This may have been said, but never use a password any source has given you.  You just don't know.  What bugs me are those impossible streams of letters and numbers and symbols they throw at you.

@cheriere,

Greetings!😊

This is a legitimate system notification from Apple.

In 2020 or so Apple added a password monitor to check our login credentials against verified databases for "data leaks" (in which your personal information, including login credentials, has been publicly exposed).

This monitor was present to some degree just prior to 2020 operating system versions, but became more robust in all subsequent versions.

It's not limited to Apple mobile devices...  it's available on Apple computers, too.

The info about this is found in Settings-->Passwords-->Security Recommendations, as @Etoile308 posted.

If you tap "Security Recommendations,"
then under
"Detect Compromised Passwords"
tap "About Passwords & Privacy"
you'll see a detailed  description of this feature and its alerts.

The compromise is not a "hack" or intrusion or invasion into the device, it's simply a check of your login info against online lists of data leaks.
It also has nothing to do with whether you used this device on a certain website.

If this monitor detects that your login info has been compromised it triggers this notification.

There are variations of the banner alert.  Essentially, you'll see something like:

Compromised Password. The password for your "[NAME OF WEBSITE]" account has appeared in a data leak putting this account at high risk of compromise. [iPad/iPhone/Safari] can help you re-secure your account.”
or
Compromised Password. Some of your passwords have appeared in a data leak, putting those accounts at high risk of compromise. [iPad/iPhone/Safari] can help you re-secure your account.

Rather than clicking on any suspicious notification, what I do:
take a screenshot,
go to my search engine,
enter a specific verbatim string of words from the notification,
and look for articles on reliable websites
or search Apple's online user guides or Apple's support community.

I don't post hyperlinks since most of them lead to something considered commercial or otherwise outside the Community standards and policies, and all too often we see helpful or interesting posts (and even entire threads) deleted and lost simply because of a live link,
but you'll find lots of articles online about this...  just do some searches if you'd like a "deep dive" or if my long post is clear as mud!🙃😜😉😊

It can be jarring the first time it shows up, for sure, so I understand the concern.
We have a savvy security-aware community of posters here, with excellent "spidey sense" internal alerts to be on the look, vigilant, cautious, and safe.😊

Wishing a peaceful Easter to all who observe, and a lovely day and a peaceful week to all who read and post.  You're the best!❤️

I immediately took a screenshot of your post.💝. Thank you so much.  You've explained it perfectly.  I really was nervous over this because I didn't think Apple devices were supposed to ever have security problems.

Again, I really appreciate your posting this.  You're awesome! 💝🌸

You're welcome, and thank you@cheriere!❤️  I have a long history with Apple, at work and for personal use.  While we all know that nothing is perfect, it's been a great choice...  still an Apple fan after all these years, but also learning new things every day!😊

I just went to my Settings and passwords.  Of course, the security breaches were some of the Free Software I received when I purchased the iPad from QVC.

I went to each and changed them immediately.  I wish I could just delete this software completely because I've NEVER even used it.  Ugh

It also recommended I change my QVC password, so I did.

Thank you again.💝🌸. I'm so glad you're here.😊
