I sent a pair of flat sandals back to the company that sent them out to me from my amazon order.
Their label was $6.95. I thought I could do better. There was a shoe box and an outer box.
$8.95!!!!! Lesson Learned.
(Also the company was supposed to send a half size larger and exchange from black to white which they listed was in stock. They refunded it instead!).

I think the cost has something to do with zip code to zip code.
Someone posting here in these Forums may post about how reasonable it is to do her own shipping because she is close to the receiving zip code, therefore their cost will be less than someone shipping across the country.
I know when I always ask for shipping price, I'm asked for the zip code.

Why did you put them in a box?

Did you insure the package for the cost of the shoes? That usually puts the price of a return over the top. I wouldn't think of sending a package that was worth returning, if I didn't insure it.

@blackhole99,Thank you for checking on me. I've never had an issue from here. They weren't expensive and I could have always put on a trace if need be. Jewelry would certainly be a different matter.

Shipping jeans is expensive too. More than $6.95.

Had the same thing happen to me yesterday. Amazon order for sandals, returning them, cost $9.98.

I work at a grocery store's postal center/customer service.
The cost of postage varies by weight and destination and the size of the box.
If I return shoes, I never put them in the outer box they came in. I wrap the shoebox inbrown shipping paper (or paper grocery bag) or put it in a large lightweight mailing envelope which keeps the package size smaller and saves postage.
Remember, if you paid for priority mail, comparing the postage paid return label and what you paid is like comparing apples and oranges. Priority is much faster and it comes with tracking and insurance up to $50.
If you send something to either coast, it'll cost more than if it's going elsewhere.
Any package that weighs over a certain amount has to go priority mail instead of first class or parcel post when paying for your own postage.
If you ever use a postage paid return label, be sure it's scanned and you get a receipt when you drop it off. It's your only proof that it was mailed in case it gets lost or misdirected.
If you think $8.95 is expensive, try sending it via UPS or FedEx. They would cost 4 times as much.

@CalminHeartThank you for the information. I't very much appreciated. The company that sent my sandals stated returns had to be in the origonal outer box which I can understand. I use my shoe boxes and they don't stack well if they're crushed.
