I live on the southeast coast of NC .  ""Matthew"" is looking like he wants to VISIT  us this weekend.  It's only Tuesday now and the local tv stations say Walmart's bread shelves are ALREADY EMPTY !  I'm in a slight panic - have no idea what I should have in the house to eat.  Anyone have suggestions??????  Thanks.

I always pre-make some egg salad, macaroni salad, sometimes chicken salad.  Basically anything that will fit in a cooler easily.  I also make a batch of cookies and brownies up (I have kids and we live in Florida).  The key really is a couple of good coolers and plenty of ice.  If you have a grill be sure you have plenty of propane or charcoal.  Hopefully Matthew will decide not to come your (or my) way.  Stay safe.

If you cook with gas, I'd have plenty of canned soups and crackers on hand.  Peanut butter and jelly.  Snack items.  Buy ice last minute for a cooler and put a few things in it, like cheese.  I could live forever on grilled cheese sandwiches if I needed to, with a room temperature juice box.  I'd also have a good supply of any snack items you eat.  Protein bars, if you eat those, would be good to have on hand.  Go to the store and walk the aisles and look for things you could use.  Pop Tarts just came to my mind.

Make sure you have plenty of batteries and flashlights/flameless candles.  Check all those NOW and replace any dead batteries.

Fill your car with gas now.

Refill any medications that are up for refill.

If you don't have a battery operated radio, maybe get one today.

Get cash from the bank.

Make sure you have plenty of water, juice boxes, etc., candles on hand.

I'm in Atlanta, so we usually don't have problems this far inland, but for ice storms we have a battery operated digital tv (5") and I always have tons of batteries for it and the flameless candles.

Bring in/secure any patio furniture.

I don't know what the temps will be like when the hurricane arrives, but if you have a fireplace and a garage, make sure you have wood in the garage.

Make sure your cell phone stays fully charged.  I also have an external charger that will charge them up 2 times more if I need them to.

I hope it veers off and stays in the ocean.  Sending my best to you @sarahpanda

Why is it, when I have a 50/50 guess at something, I'm always 100% wrong?

Depending on what you like:

One thing I liked when we lost power - Bumblebee makes tuna and chicken salad in little packs with crackers.  I lived on those, very handy.

Peanut butter and crackers or potted meat such as deviled ham and crackers.

Various kinds of raw nuts.

I live in tornado country, and we can get some really severe storms where I live.

We have had power outages where we have been without power for some time. I think that we were without power for a few days once, due to a severe storm that blew out a transformer in our area, once.

I would keep bottled water on hand, along with any non-perishable snacks that you/your family like that you can think of, including protein snacks, too.

I agree about the tuna/chicken salad packs if you like those, and things like peanut butter and jelly, beef jerky, crackers, cheese/peanut-filled cracker sandwich snacks, trail mix, nuts, dried fruits, popcorn, and so on.

Don't forget about pet foods too, for your pets.

Matthew has been churning out there for a long time.  I guess you have to prepare for the worst but sometimes the forecasters get it wrong.

cookies?  Pop tarts?  Food that requireds refrigeration like egg and macaroni salad?

How about apples, oranges, very green bananas, green avocados (these will last a few days without refrigeration) nuts, whole wheat crackers, peanut butter, canned tuna/chicken just plain water, no-calorie cranberry juices, canned veggies, beans, soup, fruit in their own juice. (Soup can be beefed up with corn, beans, canned chicken and eaten with whole wheat crackers.)

Yes, I'm hoping and praying they get it wrong but ''Al Roker'' on the TODAY SHOW this morning said all the models are in agreement now of the direction the storm will go - AND HE DREW THAT PROJECTED LINE RIGHT OVER THE TOP OF MY HOUSE !!  Have mercy , Jesus !

Hello from Outer Banks,NC....you have gotten great suggestions....crackers, peanut butter, granola,I bake some chicken, fruit and cheese, these are eaten first if electricity goes out...water,water,water...do fill up cars with gas and have some cash on hand...m&m's my personal indulgence....batteries and flashlights...just try to be as prepared as possible and hope for the best....Mother Nature will always win ...oh put all your important documents all together in a bag to grab quickly if you need to evacuate..now it's time for me to take this advice....don't forget to bring in outside items and extra pet food and treats for your fur babies....maybe Matthew will just make a hard right turn out to sea ....be safe.
