I always ask what they would prefer. The exception being my husband. If he were to have surgery I would stay round-the-clock, even if he would prefer that I didn't.

I thought hospitals made you have someone wait until the procedure/surgery was over.  That has been my experience.

Always wait, the doctor may come out and wish to speak with someone regarding the patient's condition.

My husband and I just did this yesterday for my daughter. She had surgery and we waited in the waiting room. Watched tv. Talked, played games on our phones. Stayed until it was time to take her home.

@Patriot3

my mom had a procedure last week that was out patient.

they send you text updates before, during, and after the procedure.

the doctor called me after the procedure to let me know how she was doing, how the procedure went, and to let me know that she would be in the recovery room for at least an hour after the procedure. she was then moved to a private room. i went back to the hospital after that period of time to sit with her until she was ready to be released, although she was asleep most of that time.

(other hospitals may be different?)

If it was someone I loved, I'd be there.  No question about it.
