Why is anyone wishing anyone a Happy Memorial day? What's happy about it? It's a somber, life long sad, constant memory for the millions of people who lost their lives and the loved ones they left behind. I see nothing happy about that. I find the retail aspect of it distasteful as well---I, fortuntely, am here now because my dad lived thru Korea or else I wouldn't be here at all. But he suffered from his time in the service until the day he died. Just my opinion.

I agree that's using the word "happy" is inappropriate. Memorial Day, IMO, is a day of remembrance and reflection with gratitude for those who paid the ultimate price for our freedom. 🇺🇸

Thank you @Boehm Collector for having the love, respect & care for opening a thread honoring our beloved Fallen on this "Memorial Day" holiday.
Thank you to our Cherished Fallen Soldiers, & to their Families, for offering up, & giving us your last bit of devoted measure to our beloved, grateful American Nation.
May we never, ever forget . . .

It is inappropriate to wish the day be "happy".
You're correct Kachina
It's an OBSERVANCE of Memorial Day and all who served and those who were lost.

I think people just say Happy Memorial Day without thinking. I asked DH how he felt about it (he is a disabled veteran) and he said it really doesn't bother him.
While I prefer a different word, I can remember saying it without really thinking it through when I was younger. I know a little more now.... about some of the things those who died went through. That is what makes me see it and "say it" differently now.

@wagirl @JeanLouiseFinch : Totally agree. DH is retired military and yesterday received 3 emails : Wishing him a great day and wanted to know if he will be doing a bbq to celebrate. This really upset him. He replied: thankful that he was still living. Already read his scriptures and prayed for all the ones that made the ultimate sacrifice for him to be free.He asked them to look in the dictionary for the word : Memorial.
Then he went out to eat lunch with his sister. Someone told him: Sir thank you for your service and celebrate and enjoy your day. He repied: Please don't ever say this to a Veteran on Memorial day because it's a big difference.
