Re: HOW TO KEEP DOG OFF SOFA !!!

I thought the OP asked a simple question.  Instead she got a lot of scolding on how she should be living her life with her dog. If one wants to share a sofa or bed with a pet then by all means go right ahead!

We always had a dog until recently and none were allowed on our sofa or bed.  I have a hard time sleeping and have allergies.  I also have an expensive leather couch and though pet hair may "slide right off", nails can dig in and add scratches.

Our dogs were trained at an early age to not jump on furniture.  As they got older it was more comfortable for them to say in their own beds (I made sure they were the right size and comfortable) than to jump up which could be difficult for some with arthritis.

When my brother moved nearby I asked him where his dog's bed was.  He said that she always slept in the bed with him or on the couch.  I hate to say it but sometimes his dog smells so bad I would have to go outdoors for fresh air.  He never smelled it.  That smell can get into your furniture but some people are fine with that. It makes me nauseous.

Anyway, I bought his dog a nice soft doggy bed and now he tells me that she is always in her bed and no longer jumps up on furniture.

Each situation is different. People should be able to live in their homes the best way for them.

@haddon9   I agree with what you said, but the OP came back and hollared at us (using all caps) and sald we don't know how to read.

I'm sure she knew this would be a controversial subject and would get a lot of dog lovers fired up.

Let's face it, if you want to keep your dog off the sofa, there are many options and I'm sure she could have figured them out on her own.

Re: HOW TO KEEP DOG OFF SOFA !!!

@qvc chick,  in your OP you said "All of a suddent the past few weeks, I come home from work, and I could see my pillows are a mess and that he jumped up on the sofa."  This was after having the dog for a year, apparently without him getting on the sofa.

At this point I would be more concerned about the WHY of the change than the change itself.

An educated guess would be that something startled or scared him while alone and he started getting on the sofa to get comfort from your scent.  It could be something ongoing or simply because he discovered the sofa is both comforting and comfortable.

You stress that he has an expensive memory foam bed of his own.  Have you considered putting it on the sofa seat when you are going to be gone.  If he likes the bed as much as you imply perhaps he will settle in the bed, on the sofa, leaving the cushions and pillows alone.

As stated I would be more concerned about why he changed than I would be that he changed.

Re: HOW TO KEEP DOG OFF SOFA !!!

My question is which came first the 3k sofa or the dog? If the dog came first, buy a dog friendly sofa, if the sofa with feather pillows came first, you don't get a dog.

Just as those who are neat obsessed and can't abide messes and noise shouldn't have children.

Re: HOW TO KEEP DOG OFF SOFA !!!

Do not take me to the cleaners for this idea.  I did not do this myself, but it worked for a family member in her house.  She put two mouse traps on the couch and the traps would snap when the dog tried to jump onto it. The dog did not actually get a foot or nose caught in the trap; the startle was enough.  After just a few days she only had to put the mouse traps on the couch without even setting them.

My dogs had full access to all the furniture and beds in my house.

Yikes, that sounds worse than the shock mat. I'd NEVER do that to a dog!

Re: HOW TO KEEP DOG OFF SOFA !!!

We have a rescue that is 2- 2 1/2 years old.  He is not destructive at all so he has never ruined any of our furniture.  He does sit on our couch and love seat in the living room when we are home.  But I have covers which were purchased from Amazon.  My DH and I are retired so we are home quite a bit.  The only thing I worry about is if he should have an "accident" (which is very rare) on  our hardwood floors.  We  purchased a baby gate from Amazon.  So while we are out we close the gate so he confined to the kitchen (tile floor - easier to clean) where we have his bed.  He stays there quite comfortably until we get home.

130 lb!? I love it. What kind of dog do you have? We are big dog people but ours only weigh half that. So we have 130 lb of dog only it's two dogs🧡🐾🐕🐾🧡

@monicakm Big dogs are all we've ever had, but he's in the top two for size! Coach is a Lab/Great Pyrenese mix. He's completely black except for a white patch on his chest, and on the bottoms of his feet, so "first impression" is that he's a giant Black Lab. But his fur is more like the GP, in that it's longer (but not as long as the GP), and softer than the typical Lab--plus he has a feathery tail & backside! He's also incredibly strong-willed and stubborn, which are also GP traits, according to friends who have purebred GP's. He's a sweetheart, though, in spite of that!

Re: HOW TO KEEP DOG OFF SOFA !!!

Well I asked a simple question.  I won't do that again.  My dog is completely spoiled, sleeps on king bed with me every night, has the life.

Only thing is I did not want him to ruin my sofa,  Why is that so hard to undertand??

And people come into my house, they go to sit on the sofa and they are covered with dog hair.

I do not want that - why do I get a hard time ???
