Re: HOW TO KEEP DOG OFF SOFA !!!

With all due respect, one of the greatest joys is snuggling with your fur baby on the couch.

All of the family should be "allowed" to sit where they wish, enjoying being close to those they love.

I have a shock mat for my dogs. They come in different sizes, it's battery operated and the shock level is adjustable from low to high. Thicker fur on dogs will need the setting up higher. The brand I have is ScatMatIt works and once your dog jumps up on one then it will make it not want to do it again so eventually you won't need to use the mat anymore. Dog will be trained to stay off the couch.

The ScatMat isn't going to cause any harm to your dog. I sat down on it myself to see how it felt and it was like sitting down on pins and needles...very uncomfortable.

I can't imagine doing that...ever.

many couches smell from dogs. The oil in the coats sticks.  Usually owners don't smell it.  I would train to get off or put covers on couch. As far as a leather couch...my daughters 7000. Leather couch is scraped and scratched from the dogs.  She trained to let them only on when she is there.  But she has 3 Great Danes. lol mthkse nails. I am amazed how the one Dane, 230 lbs curls up in this little ball. lol. They are such gentle dogs.  But not really couch friendly dogs. I love dogs, but hate the dog smell in house. My cat sleeps on a blanket, he has to have his blankie

Re: HOW TO KEEP DOG OFF SOFA !!!

I had a dog that thought my couch was a chew toy. I wasn't thrilled but it wasn't the end of the world. He stopped the behavior and I bought a new couch. He used to sleep in bed with me . He would get cold and sleep under the covers. When he got warm, he would sleep on the comforter. He brought me so much joy. He was quite a character. I miss him everyday.

We can look at the positives in life or focus on the negatives, it is our choice. IMHO, dogs are the positive that bring joy to our lives for a short period.

I don't have dogs but my son has two and they're like my grandbabies--I love them!  When we visit one has her own doggie bed she lays on and the other lays on his couch. Not a big deal--he has a cover on it that he cleans regularly so not to dirty the couch.

Well, obviously, this is a very touchy subject.  My dogs have always been allowed on our furniture and beds, but I can understand and respect the opinions of those who don't feel the same way.

I have leather furniture so there really is no problem.  Pet hair doesn't stick to it and the cushions are attached so they don't get moved or crumpled up.  Now granted, I'm always finding the throw pillows on the floor, but I can deal with that.

I would just do as others have suggested and either buy a specially made sofa cover or put an old blanket down.  I'm sure if you checked with a trainer or even on line, you could get instructions on how to re-direct your dogs behavior.

Same exact!  Leather sectional with zero issues.  Hair wipes right off, attached cushions and none of ours scratches anything up including the cats.  We have 4 dogs and 3 cats.  We lost our oldest dog a few months ago and I miss her terribly.  I wish she was here on this couch right now.

Re: HOW TO KEEP DOG OFF SOFA !!!

My dog has his own faux leather dog couch but he still would prefer my furniture. I don't mind him sitting with me while we watch TV or cuddle with him on the couch. For those times we use a blanket or he has a bolster pillow made for dogs & the couch  I got from Touch of Class catalog he loves it & they will even embroider the dogs name on it. We have trained him to stay off the couch unless invited by putting the clear vinyl carpet runners with the grippers on the underside that they use to protect high traffic areas that they sell at Lowes on a roll. We put  these on the furniture at night & when we leave the house with the spiky side up. He only jumped on the couch once or twice & decided it was too uncomfortable. He doesn't try to get on the couch unless we say it is ok

I was married to a hunting man. We had hunting dogs and they weren't even allowed to come inside the house! That wasn't my idea.

Re: HOW TO KEEP DOG OFF SOFA !!!

We have two rescued cats, mother and daughter.  They aren't the kind you can scoop up and snuggle.  They're too wild for that.  They love to be pet though.

My livingroom always looked so sloppy because I'd had pestamals (colorful turkish towels with the fringes on the ends) spread all across the couches and chairs.  And every two or three days they needed to be washed.  Couch always looked either hairy and/or crumpled.  So....

We built an addition on to the back of the house this past spring.  And that is where our beautiful couch and chairs are now.

Because we get nice breezes from the bay, I had the builder install a 'Mr. Ed' door (dutch door) so we can get the airflow we always had, but cats can't enter.  Door bottom closes automatically.

It cost an arm and a leg, but I'm not complaining. Wish we'd done it sooner!

Cats are happy, my husband built a 'stairway to heaven' so they can look out the front windows.  Three steps up and a 3' x 3' foot platform for them to lay on.  I put down soft chenille rugs on it for them.  That's all the washing I have to do now for them.

Re: HOW TO KEEP DOG OFF SOFA !!!

@qvc chick My neighbor put aluminium foil across the seat cushions. It only took one time and her dog stayed off the sofa.

My dogs don't even try to go on the sofa. They love their beds.
