As was wisely noted in an earlier post, most of us have the capacity to do multiple things.

 

We can acknowledge and remember the sacrifices of the fallen.

 

And we can enjoy the weather, perhaps a long weekend with food and family and also shop.  Everything isn't mutually exclusive. 

 

I have always done all.

DH is a disabled Viet Nam vet. He said it is a day we honor those who gave their lives for our freedom and that freedom should make us happy.  Every year he lines the front of our yard with flags and he is happy for that freedom.

@Tinkrbl44 If someone said to you "Have a nice Memorial", "I hope your enjoy your Memorial Day!" is that any different?  

 

As a Christian, I celebrate Christmas in my own way.  If I didn't I would be angry at what goes on in the name of "Christmas."  All in all I think people are just saying have a good time, not intending disrespect or ruining the day or not understanding.  I can't fault folks for wishing others a nice day.
